£220'ish + V.A.T. to get my fan belt changed?

I called a Nissan Main dealer (Polesworth) to find out how much my fan belt would be to be changed (fed up of the squeeling now!)

I was informed that it would be;

£160'ish for the labour 'if' all he belts needed to be removed to put on the fan belt, but they should all be changed anyway....

£18.21 for my A/C belt

£19.15 for my Fan/Alternator Belt

£18.21 for my Power Steering Belt

So roughly £220'ish for the whole job, plus the old VAT of course...

This sounds steep to me but I could be wrong.

Can I get it done cheaper?

HELP!!!

Matty.

Matty,

Do it yourself it's a doddle, just buy the belts.

Really is as easy as changing a light bulb.

Tim

Come on man - you did your brakes, this should be easy !

£220 +VAT does seem a lot. To put it into perspective SE charge about the same (including VAT) to do the cambelt. And they are not cheap, although hourly rate is always less than Nissan.

Matty!

You know what the chief engineer at Poleworth told me to do to get rid of the fanbelt squeel ... and I kid you not ... Buy some MrSheen and spray it on the belts every other week!!!!!!!!

What absolute b*llocks! I would stay away from Polesworth if I were you. They're okay to source parts (usually overnight) but for christ sake don't let them touch your car.

Changing the fanbelt (or any of the other belts (excl. the timingbelt) is easy to do if you can get under your car.

Don't let them near your prized possession mate!

Cheers biggrin.gif

Yet again Nissan Main Dealers excel....are they vaguely aware of how much money they are costing themselves...they are only interested in servicing Nissan Micras owned by 40+ numpties whio know no better!!!

Forward you mail to Nissan Headquarters in Japan see what they say!!!

Of course the fanbelt may not need changing, just adjusting. And if it still squeals you could wipe it over with a damp cloth, when it dries it's usually OK.

Further to Andy's suggestion, here's the page from the Service Manual as to how to adjust the belt tension:

Go on Matty what you gotta lose apart from 200 nicka?

And if you agree to help, I would need to borrow your ramps! smile.gif

Am thinking of moving to a house in the same street as we live in now, 1 extra bedroom, BIG garage with workshop and get this, the main selling point for me in the 'Pit' for working uder the Z, seriously considering putting in an offer, really nice pad too!

The 'Pit' swings it for me, now just to convince Em........ wink.gif

Anyone who can get the front of a Zed on standard ramps must be related to Paul Daniels. Back yes, front - no way. There's just too much overhang.

Buy that gaff with the pit - I was seriously considering digging a hole in my garage floor !!!

Matty,

I've been living in a pit for years! lol

I'm looking for a 2 bedroom bungalow with a quadruple garage!

Seriously though, would love to help, unfortunately I'm on the Kent coast, and I think you're in Birmingham, aren't you?

Very glad you've decided to sort it yourself, the only way to learn about these, or any, car is by the hands on approach.

Good luck m8

Tim

Belts from courtesy Nissan were $23!!! for all three (+ the usual VAT, duty and delivery)

BTW... Maybe they wouldn't charge much more to do your timing belt at the same time, if it's due soon. (And then you can have an underdrive pulley it you really want!) (the timing belt is $30)

Don't go to Nelson matey, especially not that one after what Dan has been through there! wink.gif

Mine is squealing aswell but not that bad just when I first start it up. But I've got an ASP pulley and all the belts waiting to go on so I'll be sorted once that gets fitted.

Jeff is your man Mat Lad...

Garages? Yeah, you can get a fookin' Range Rover in mine...but not a Z!!! It's bloody fat arse sticks out the door by about a foot! LMAO biggrin.gif

Jeez. Sounds about right for a Nelson.

I'm booked into Hiteq next week for replacement Cam Belts, Radiator, Water Pump, Iridium Plugs and those 3 Accessory Belts... all for about £175.00 labour!!

Bloody hell mate, that's good!

I'm gonna start using them aswell, SE were great with me but too far away now...bummer but not to worry. Hiteq come on high recommendation aswell from loadsa Z peeps.

I was amazed too. Mind you the total bill including parts and VAT comes to about £950.00 squids which is not nice but that's Z parts for you.

The deal started off as me asking for a Cam belt change and being quoted £175.00 + £40.00 ish for belts (each I think)

Mentioned the radiator and they said it was easy to do at the same time so no extra charge just £270.00 for the Rad. Same for the water pump at about £55.00. Accessory belts have to come off anyway so just £18.00 each for them.

Finally mentioned I was thinking about doing the plugs and he said he'd fit them in as well at £80.00 for a set of Iridium ones.

Maybe the final bill will look a bit different to the phone conversation as has a habit of happening but Ian at Hiteq saved me £1600.00 last year when a Nelson wanted to remove the engine to change the head gaskets and it turned out to be a faulty Rad cap!

Matty,

I had all three belts you mentioned change. I bought the belts myself for about the same price as what you've put down and labour was £35 + VAT m8.

The job they did was pretty good. I went back to them to retension the belts because of squels at no charge. £160 for labour is a rip-off.

The garage was Five lamps Auto in Derby.

Laterz,

Van

I had Nelson change my fan belt about 2 years

ago it cost £135, the belt was £15!!!

One week later the water pump packed in so

that was a further £400, the new water pump

lasted 800 miles and needed replacing.

Nelson had fitted the first one incorrectly

and no i didn`t pay for the second one.

Ian.

Sounds like Nissan over tightened that first belt and took the pump out ...quite common.Jeff TT
