Hi,

I've got one of these yellow transformer boxes that I used with Kango breaker. The problem is it keeps tripping the switch at the mains board but only when you first plug it in, it works perfectly after that  The breaker is a 16amp one for the garage electrics. Any ideas?

Cheers

Vijay

Surge of tranny starting up takes MCB out. This is common,as the current

consummed on start up can be double/three times of the running consumtion.

dont worry.

Cheers. Any idea how I can stop this as it supply power to the garage alarm which goes off when the power is cut :(

the 16a breaker is in the house dist board which goes into another board (in the garage) which splits into the lighting and socket circuits

Then you are FOOcEd unless you change the feed cable to the

garage and up rate the breaker, you could turn the feed into a ring

circuit and change to a 32amp breaker. REMEMBER all electrical majior

works must conforme to building regs as of 1-01-2005

It might be the right time to re-lay the cable as I've got to dig up part of the drive anyway. What size armoured cable would I need?

why have they brought these new laws in anyway?

Cheers for the help,

Vijay

Just to stop the diyers from electrocuting everbody!

would have to look up specs for underground laying.

and remeber the new colour codes are in operation

as well!

just had a thought. The fusebox in the garage splits the circuit into a light circuit protected by a 5 amp fuse and the socket circuit which has a 20amp fuse. If I changed that fuse to a 16amp trip switch, would that trip first or would the house MCB trip as well?

Vijay

Sorry to but in guys but before we rebuild the house plug the said tranny into 1 of the sockets on the house ring main, if it knocks the breaker out then the fault is with the tranny. ;) I dont think the tranny should even trip a good 16a breaker, try pluggin something else in like the iron or an electric fire to test the socket out. :)

Cheers Steve. I'll try the transformer in a house socket tomorrow. I've been using power tools in the garage with absolutely no problem, it's just the transformer.

Vijay

Think you will find its the startup load doing it. if the tranny was faulty

the rcb would go out due to earth or neutral leakage, but try that by

all means.

Hi gruntpa64, what do you reckon on this - just had a thought. The fusebox in the garage splits the circuit into a light circuit protected by a 5 amp fuse and the socket circuit which has a 20amp fuse. If I changed that fuse to a 16amp trip switch, would that trip first or would the house MCB trip as well?

Vijay

If you lower the rating of the garage socket supply it should break

first, but you never know!!! I am a electrical service engineer, so i dont get

involved with supply very offen. but i will check the regs to see if you

could cahange the mcb you have to a Class C which has a longer

trip time to allow for motor start up, this is what is spec on equipment

that uses large motor current on start up.

cheers mate, I appreciate the help.

Just an update, tried it on a house socket and no problems at all.

Vijay

Yep have checked you can fit a "class C" if one is avalible for your dist board.

What make is it? If it is a Merlin Gerin I have loads at work, but i would not think

it is.

thanks mate, I really appreciate that. Both boards are Wylex. I may be running a new cable anyway as I might need a 22 amp supply for a car lift, not sure yet. Your help has really been appreciated :)

Vijay
