Whats it like to do a cam belt on a TT with air con? anyone done one? figured if i'm doing all this may as well replace all belts and water pump etc as well. anyone have any ideas on this??

If you know what you are doing it can save you a lot of money. I think garages class it as a 10 hour job. There are instructions on how to do it here.

It is better to replace everything at the same time cos you dont want to have to take everything off again when the next thing goes.

Yes I know there is no link there cos I cant get onto TT.net

Look on the Courtesy web page, they list a 60K service kit with all the relevent parts.

thanks to all for your help. Have any of you actually done this? I used to be a mechanic and dont mind doing it just wanna know about any pitfalls i should watch out for?

cheers guys

Nope, I'm a lazy git with more money than time (which indicates how little time I have !!). I usually get SE to do complicated Z specific things, or my mate in the next village when it needs ramps.

ok thanks a lot for that andyp. once again!! you are gonna get very tired of me shortly arent you?!!!!!

Latz

Latz buddy, the belt is fairly straight forward BUT!!! unless you are really sure about your mechanical ability let a garage do it.But if you fancy it here goes some tips and pitfalls

(I have done a few of these and found the following)

First the reccommended change of water pump at the same time is not fully neccassary however be aware that if it fails shortly after the belt change you have to do the whole job again!as access to the pump position is the same as accessing the belt. The pump price has come down lately so is not too bad. However I do reccomend you change the thermostat and the two rubber connection pipes between the block and water inlet/ outlets. I found that a straight section of pipe the correct diameter can be cut to suit and is cheaper than the Nissan parts. (local motor discount store)

The rad requires removing as does connection to the auto box cooler (if yours is auto)

also you need a puller to release the main pully wheel (DO NOT USE A HAMMER)

when you are eventually in there position engine at tdc no 1 and Tipex the set points onto the belt and the pulleys /crank etc. Once the belt is off the two belts can be put together and the set points transfered. There is a teeth counting method that I also use in conjunction with the above so as to be fully sure. this is detailed in the workshop manual and on TT Net.

turn the engine over manually once you are happy with the belt fit, once turned over a few times do not expect the timming marks to re align they will not for a good few turns.

when rebulding do change the drive belts to aircon etc because its never as easy as it will be without the rad in.

Here is a prep list

MATERIALS

1 Belts

2 auto fluid

3 Anti freeze

4 Thermostat

5 Rubber Hose

TOOLS

1 Jack

2 Full socket set

3 Hex and allen bits

4 Puller

5 Screwdrivers

TIPS

1) The power steering belt adjuster is a bitch! there is a 12mm bolt behind the pulley that is accessed by turning the pulley until a hole lines up with and a small shouldered socket will fit through

2)When the rad is out remove the drain cock at the bottom and clear and refit with some grease, will be easy to open if needed later date

3)Also at the rad if auto blow through the auto tranny cooler to be sure its clear(do not get water in here), also run a hose pipe through the rad as a fush.

4)Take the opurtunity to clean the connectors to the front water sensors (in the in / out ally assembly

Finally expexct a long day on your fist one can be done in 5 hours if all goes well plan around 8 hours or longer if all the materials are not pre arranged.

Prices ( All approx) Nissan

Timing Belt £47

Water Pump £60

Air Con Belt £15

Alternator Belt £15

Power Steering Belt £15
