Actually, that's a mite cheeky calling it a TVR, if it's a 5.0l, then it's a Rover, right ?

Yeah more than likely matey, although I do know that TreVoR did make quite a few mods to the bog standard Range Rover lump before slapping it into a TVR! ;)

Yeah they must have done a fair bit to it to make it THAT unreliable  Maybe they let Nissan engineers loose on it :x:  ;)

shit thats the danglies!

PMSL :D

You're not wrong Andy, I had two Range Rovers and never had any mechanical problems with them whatsoever so TVR must have beefed the engines upto such a point that they fooked them up in the reliability stakes! ;) Bit like Z tuning you mean! :D

Actually Wrong,

TVR created a company caller Power Engineering, I believe, and they developed from the ground up their own straight 6 and V8 engines.

That V8 is a REALLY small engine, (in outside dimension terms)

As I remember, their own V8 was as small as the old Ford V6 they used to use and lighter too

I think that was the later engines only, as fitted to the Cerbera onwards. The early 4.0 and 5.0's were Rovers with tweaks and sophisticated electronic mangement systems.

Again, I'm not too sure about that. I used to work for 2 TVR garages, and saw or heard no evidence of power tuning to normal model TVRs.

The 420 SEAC had some work to get it to either 300 or 320 bhp, (and only weighed in at about 1 ton) cant remember exactly. but the standard 350, 390 and 450's were IIRC, just standard, or bored and stroked...

I spent a week working in the factory when they were developing one of their track cars,

They had a TVR S, with Ford Cossie lump, with a reputed 800hp

Was not long after that, they launched the Tuscan again.. hmmmmmmm

Aaahhhh... apologies for that then, That sounds likely then... their own V8 was released in 96, indeed into the Cerbera

(I was working there around 1987 as a dumbass "apprentice") ;)

Their web also states that at the time, this engine was the hightest rated for torque and power of any NA engine around... quite impressive

I didnt realise they took the Rover (nee Buick) V8 to 5 litres though...

I just looked at the TVR website, in 1998 they also launched their V12, which I knew was a beast, but didnt remember it was a 7.7 litre 880hp V12!!

Right boy's I worked for TVR parts for about 2 years and here's the story. The rover V8 was used by the company in the wedges, V8S, Griffith and Chimaera. The 5.0 was a standard block with a unique-to-TVR crank and oversize pistons and valves. The 4.0 and 4.5 engines were oversize pistons I think but not valves and a standard crank.

Oh yeah and the 5.0 was like shit3 off a shovel!

Ivan

Slight change of tack, but I was thinking about Lotus 7 stylee motors today, and I reckon my fave option would be to stick in a tuned S14 lump. Potentially more power for less weight.

Ford, Vauxhall and Rover enignes seem to be the choice... presumably due to price.
