Happy new year to you all. Had my ZX (unmodified auto uk car) for about a week and have a few questions as this is my first 300ZX.

(1) I was advised at service that my drive belts are starting to crack. Cam belt was changed at 60k (97k on the clock now) Should I replace the belts now or will they be ok for a a few k or so?

(2) What fog lights should the car have? I only have rear offside. Surely I should have more fog lights somewhere!?

(3) Turbo noise.... yes I know this is an old chestnut. I would characterise the sound as a distant US style police siren as it rises in pitch. Always makes me check the mirrors lol  Anything to worry about here?

Thanks for your attention

Chris

(1) Cracking belts are never a good sign.

(2) What you got? UK or Jap import? UK has 2 rear fog light. Jap have front fogs but no rear fogs, but they are put on to pass a UK MOT.

(3) You shouldnt be able to hear the turbos. Not as loud as you describe anyway. You may have a boost leak some where.

1) How long is a piece of string? ;) They could go at any time really but I wouldn't worry yourself too much in the near future ;) Cambelt is different altogether, although that should be fine - you can't see it though because its behind the covers.

2) What you have is correct for a UK car - although there's two fog lights, one is a dummy ;)

3) Turbos should not make any sound. Although with boost jets some people say you can hear them. Also possible you have a boost leak. If not then it could be that one of the compressor/exhaust wheels has fin damage, causing excessive turbulence which causes the noise you hear...

My 200SX turbo started making that noise - and needed a new turbo.

Hope yours is ok though!

And welcome to the site!

Its What duffy says

As a point mine are refurbished and I can hear them on acceleration during initial warm up, but never after.

Thanks for the tips chaps. I'll certainly keep a close eye on the belt situation. Is there anything I should look/listen for belt wise?

Re turbo noise, I find exactly the same as Dave. I get the whistle on acceleration from about 20-30 mph in the first few miles. It disappears completely after a short while. Is this a question of driving off boost for a good long warm up period to let the oil circulate?

Cheers,

Chris

might be pissing in the wind but as people have said you could have a boost leak thats more noticable when the vac hoses are cold once warm there possibly sealing better therfor the noise has gone

Good thinking Greg!

So whats the likely culprit for a boost leak? A hose somewhere?
