Thinking about a new car and have long been a fan of the 300zx twin turbo. What I'm wandering is a couple of things about performance. Being turbo and a 3 litre I imagine you can get a good bit of power out of some not too expensive mods. I would be getting an auto Jap import hopefully with some upgraded alloys and stereo and some minor engine mods. What kinda quarter mile times are modified 300zx's running with auto box. Could I expect to see 13.5 or is that asking too much. To get 350BHP ie 70 increase and say a fair increase in torue what kinda mods would I need? I have noticed some decent modified cars in Japan at auction, would anyone advise getting something already altered as long as the tuning isn't too extreme, I want something relaxed and smooth in the street just that can compete with other quick cars.

All advice welcomed, thanks for your time.

Ahh yeah and what importers do you recommend, anyone used Newera with success? I found a couple of scare stories about them but generally their rep is solid. Can zeds be imported now I know there is this model report thing.

welcome to the club mate. these are frequently-asked questions, but hey that what we're here for!

1/4-mile times for a lightly-modded TT auto would prolly sit around 13.5-14.5. There's a thread here somewhere when a load of us (excluding myself :( ) did a few runs and got some good times.

to get 350bhp, well, just click on 'my 300zx' below  :D

you can get an extra 70 quite easily with intake, zorst, chip and jets/controller.

check the For Sale forum here first for some great cars that are already in the UK and have been well looked after.

last bit of advice: standard auto boxes can be a little dodgy and let you down leading to an expensive rebuild/conversion.

Thanks for such an informative reply, seems like a decent bunch of people here with some good knowledge. It definetly sounds right for me, just out of interest how quick does your feel, being the target figure i have for power. If you are at the lights and get a good launch do you find you are taking out some m3's and porsche's etc? Does it have traction control as one thing bit worrying is all that power through the rear wheels.

Never had a problem with Newera myself when I imported my car in the Spring of 2003. Miguel is a great guy to deal with and really knows his stuff. Wasn't overly impressed with the UK side of the operation, a bit slow on the uptake and not overly helpful IMO but as the vast majority of things are sorted by Miguel in Japan I wouldn't let that put you off.

A lot of the info you're looking for can be found by using the "Search" function on this site. I found it really helpful myself when I was in your position.

Cheers,

Leigh.

with basic mods listed they are fookin quick! iv got same mods + lightweight flywheel & underdrive pully. got a timed 4.7 sec 0-60 with my G-Tec pro.

iv got Racelogic Traction Control & would recommend it with the amount of power these things put out - plus its a lot of fun being adjustable ;)

dont worry about M3s and porsche's (at least the one's without turbos!). Like Paul says, Racelogic TC is recommended if youre serious (ive not owned one myself but Chunk, another member on here, had one in his). Make sure youve got decent rubber too!

mine was running a HKS superdragger exhaust and a hks mushroom filter, which ive now changed for a apexi one, and i ran a 0-60 of 5.47 at silverstone @ TRAX 2004, bearing in mind mines a manual as well. ive now got a blitz SBC-ID III boost controller JWT chip downpipes and decats (fitted next week). Im guessing it should be above the 350bhp mark. and its not cost me alot to do these mods, most of which have been buying bitz off the lads on here.

If you want to know what sort of competition the zed has check out the 'whos whooped what roadkill' thread by shrimpy and you will be suprised.

fantasics cars for the money, just a touch expensive to fix when something big goes wrong... but dont let this put you off... you wont find a cars with more bang for the buck i tell you that for certain!

This truly sounds good, can anyone recommend a top tuner for zeds, who can program aftermarket ECU's and make sure everything is running well. I am in London so somewhere in sotuh east who can look after servicing tuning and everything would be good.

john dixon can program you a quality chip,i think hes based in kidderminster or chris@getgreddy can sort you out with a safe aftermarket chip all you need is right here on this forum. £20 subscription is needed for your full support

ryan@z-tech near swindon is a z-specialist and is very good might be a drive but for peace of mind its fully worth it ;) HTH

Check out the link in my sig for some quality zed racing videos :D

350BHP is pretty easy tbh, exhaust, intake, chip and boost jets. De-cat I suppose optional. Under a grand new or lots cheaper second hand. I recommend the HKS ALC for speeding up gearshift in the auto - Chris@GetGReddy sells them in the traders section, quality bit of kit.

Make sure you have an uprated autobox cooler first though :) Seriously.

Good luck

Pete
