Well I've had my Zed all of a week, first time I get to put my foot down properly, and I manage to bounce off the limiter in 2nd!!

Not good I know..

1st and 2nd are fine, but it just won't shift from 2nd to 3rd. It's been suggested that there might be a problem with my TPS, but I'd be suprised if it's that when it's changing from 1st to 2nd just fine.

But hey.. what would I know? I've only been a Zed owner a week!

Is there anything I can try guys?

HELP!!

Get a new gearbox mate. My one did the same  smell the gearbox oil, if its burnt your box has most likely had it. try reseting the ecu (Unplug bettery for an hour) see if that helps. Also try an oil change on the box.

Other than that, start saving.

Steady on Nick, thats a good bit of advice :D

Are you feeling OK!! :D:D:D

Sorry to say Mr eViL that a new box is on the cards!! Yaseen has one that is reasonably cheap, as does Mark, Pete Shrimp, MarkZX and Baggins does a uprated one if you like.

All the best

Well the Gearbox oil is nice 'n' pink..

No burning..

Any other suggestions other than 'It's time for a new box?'

Im in exactly the same boat mate and have a garage full of manual gearbox waiting to go in.

My advice (as a non-expert): keep it in '2' and dont use 'D' - it should still be okay (read this thread! http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=42658 )

Disconnect battery for an hour to reset ecu (long shot but you never know!).

Perform an autobox diagnostic to see if it throws up any errors.

sorry matey sounds like the box is knackered if ya just bought it and they knew about the prob they pobably changed the gear oil to try n fix it :( if ya bought it from a garage try gettin it done under warrenty :) be warned though as ya probably know warrentys arnt worth the paper there written on 9 out of 10 times and thell say its just worn and not totally broken(they said that on a leaky gearbox bearing on my tomcat hit it with a big hammer put it back together they paid up :) ) Have u reset ecu yet ? any fault codes ?

I reset the ECU then checked the diagnostics and everything is ok on the electrical side of things by the looks of it.

I can't believe my rubbish luck..

Looks like a Manual Conversion after just a week..

if you want another autobox bud mine works perfectly and is for sale for £400 due to me breaking my car

I'll let you know mate.

To be honest, if autobox is going to be this much hassle over and over, I'd rather just make the transition to Manual.

I'll keep you posted.

is your car an import? if it is you wanna get an aftermarket oil cooler, it seems alot of import autoboxes fail beacuse they overheat

doh! just saw th title of the thread and realised it is an import

Well I followed SkylineDave's advice and left the shifter in at 2.

Shouldn't this just permanently keep the car in 2nd Gear? Cus if so.. the Car's still shifting from 1st to 2nd and back again like it's in normal drive.. Is that right?

f00k me.. I thought buying an automatic was the answer to less stressful driving.. doh!

yeah i think it limits the car to 2 except when going at very slow speeds where it may change down, but i keep HOLD on to try to keep it locked in one gear as much as poss. mine's been in this state since August and its still held out on me - but needless to say im taking it slowly.

thats how its supposed to work :)

Mine did the exact same

Pilot filter disintegrated, made its way through the box causing damage. Called for a full rebuild.

But has been good since. (2 years)
