I'm thinking of changing the fluid in my a/t - on the advise of Brian Corish (thanks mate). I have read the previous posts on the forum re this subject but am still unclear as to which is the correct type (i.e., viscosity). Could someone please tell me which brand to purchase or if the stuff at uncle Harry's is okay to use ...

Thanks a bunch! biggrin.gif

Oh yeah, and any tips on the tranny draining procedure would be appreciated as well - i.e., where and how ... wink.gif

I use dextron 2 auto fluid which you can buy anywhere!!

Danny,

First - Dexron II, IIE, III fluid is fine, or Redline Synthetic ATF. Basically any ATF meeting Dexron II or higher standards.

Two ways of changing the fluid;

Drain through the drain plug on the transmission oil pain - *if* you have a drain plug. Some pans do not, in which case you need to drop the oil pan itself, then replace the gasket and refit.

Using this method, you won't get much fluid out, since a lot sits in the torque convertor and other places - you'll need to change the fluid two or three times to get it all (mostly) clean.

If you drop the pan, replace/clean the strainer too. (You'll probably do about 3 or 4 litres at a time this way I believe)

Alternatively,

find a good A/T specialist, and get them to flush the fluid - to do this they hook up a machine to the oil inlet/outlet lines of the box, basically they pump the old fluid out and new fluid in, which changes all the fluid. I think the capacity this way is about 9 or 10 litres.

Thanks Az.

Jezus! The A/T holds 10L of fluid ...!? I need to get me a bigger bucket in that case. I'm not sure if I'm going to do it myself now that I know what's involved. I'm jacking up the car this weekend so I'll have a peek to see if I have a drain plug or not.

Thanks for the advice guys!

Danny, if you use the drain plug method you'll only get about 4l of oil out tops... So you don't need toooo big a bucket..

But yeah -it is a pain, and if you have to drop the oil pan, access isn't exactly easy..
