Oops!

Just realised my tax ran out in September :slap: . The reminder will have gone to my old address as I keep forgetting to change it since I moved.

Anyone know if I'm likely to have a hefty fine waiting?

Any way of avoiding it?

:D I cant remember how long you get to renew/declare SORN, but i reckon your too late. I think the fine is about £80

I got fined £25 for my MG (fooking ridiculous as tax cost me £0 anyway) and that was after about 10 months.

you get up to the expiration date of the tax or the sorn :)

they are lenient up to around the 4 week overdue mark though.

i was lucky enough to miss the charge - not only had my tax run out but my MOT as well

thats two lessons learnt

Thought they changed the rules? IIRC, if you dont renew your tax/declare SORN within x days of your current tax expiring you have to pay a fixed penalty of £80?

it says on the registration document 4 weeks, but I believe if you get pulled over then you can still get a fine for no tax.

As mine is about 9 weeks, it looks like I'm for it then.

Great - £80, plus having to buy tax again before Xmas

Lesson learned - change V5 address asap!

I still think they are lenient up to a 4 week period, I've paid 2 lots of tax 2-3 weeks late this year and had no fines, the computer process is probably at the end of the following month.

On the subject of road tax, did you know our Labour govt are planning a new tax for us motorists called registration tax.

It will apply to all cars including disabled drivers, pre 1973 classics and those declared SORN. The expected fee is £4.50 , but thats just to get their foot in the door.

It's expected they'll then abolish road tax and add the cost onto fuel tax, which they're under pressure to do as it's seen as a fairer system. BUT guess what... they'll then raise the fee for the new registration tax year on year!! So we end with higher fuel tax AND still have road tax but collected under a new name!

There's loads more nasties Labour are lining up for us too.

as Mike says they are lenient to a degree, takes into account people in hospital etc,

might be worth trying to blag them m8, if your car is staying off the road then sorn it online, and if there is a comments box, state you have tried telephoning and still heard nothing, or ring to sorn and say the same if you intend retaxing then do it before you change any details, otherwise it will just bring it to light,

retax and hope for the best
