My Z aways used to fire up at the first turn of the key with no throttle.

The last couple of mornings its been a bit reluctant and needs 10 secs of starter motor, sometimes several times, and some throttle pedal before starting.

Once it startes, it then hesitates for maybe a half second as if it's on less than six cylinders, then runs fine for the rest of the day.

Any ideas what might be wrong?

Cheers

Sounds like a faulty check valve in the fuel pump assembly. Try priming the fuel pump several times before actually starting the car.

Turn the ignition on so the lights come on and you hear the fuel pump buzz for 2 seconds. DO NOT CRANK THE STARTER YET. Turn the ignition back off again and leave for a couple of seconds. Repeat this 5 or 6 times then try to start the car. If it fires first time (or much sooner) then the fuel is draining back into the fuel tank when you turn the engine off. When you come back to start the car again, the fuel pump has to re-fill the lines before the engine gets any fuel - hence the delay in starting....

Dont mean to hijack the thread but could this also be my problem.i can start the z and itll miss pull over ignition off restart her an shes fine.just discovered if i turn ignition on then off before firing her up no miss !

Mike and Andy - thanks gents! I'll try those.

Damo: don't apologise. It's all about sharing information. But Your problem sounds different to mine. Mine won't start at all at first. It just goes dugga-dugga-dugga-dugga-dugga-dugga-dugga-dugga-dugga-dugga-dugga-dugga-dugga-dugga-dugga-dugga-dugga-dugga on the starter for 15 secs, then it fires up and is fine for that drive and the rest of the day.

But TBH, I don't know a lot about these thing so I could be wrong.

Hmm ... no joy so far.

I tried starting it (normally) and it didn't fire, just dugga-dugga.

I stopped and got the fuel pump to prime 6 times (sounded like it was at the back of the car) by turning key on (wait) off.

Tried to start it and it still wouldn't... just dugga-dugga-dugga

After about 30 secs of dugga-dugga and half throttle it spluttered into life, then ran fine for a minute.

I turned it off, tried to start it again and it just did the dugga-dugga thing again.

I would guess it's not the fuel return valve then...?

I haven't tried an ECU check yet (or ever!) butll as soon as I can do it the light.

Any more ideas...?

Thanks guys!

Like Duffer said sounds like fuel pressure or lack of it until you get it trough the lines again.Sure you haven't got a fuel leak which could let the pressure go overnight??-just a thought! ;)

You could well be right. I don't know much about cars.

I thought once it was running, the fuel pressure would be fine and it'd start straight up when I turned it off and on again LIKE i TRIED EARLIER. oops caps

It does sound quite likely though. My car is 1999 :D NA  auto  if that makes any difference.

It's still not starting right.

It did this once or twice a few months ago but I thought nothing of it. Now it's doing it all the time (unless the car's just been driven).

I think Andy could well be right but I'll have a go at the electronic diagnostic thing too. Any idea where there's some instructions to take me through it?

Cheers!
