Went to see a black auto in New Malden yesterday, but ended up walking away as some of it just didn't ring true with me. Bodywork was very good considering it's a 1990, but it had a chunk out of the leather seat and a rip in the cover over the boot. Also had an oil leak which the guy said was fixed but there was fresh oil there so didn't quite believe it. The fan and alternator were just coated in oil. It had done 68k, but I have suspicions it might have been clokced as it appears to have only done 18k in the last 5 years. Mi biggest concern was the V5 wasn't in the guys name and hadn't even been signed to the new owner by the previous keeper, that coupled with the VIN plate being held on by plastic studs instead of riveted in, and being moveable, you could lift it up, made me have serious doubts about the authenticity of it. I walked away from it, just didn't feel confident enough. However, it did look awesome in black and I reckon I'm gonna try and hold out for a black one now.

One quick question, the guy selling it reckoned it that only the imports are twin turbo's, and if it's UK spec it'll be an NA, I didn't think that was the case as I'm sure I've seen people talk about UK spec TT's on here, but knowing enough about them I didn't like to correct him. Is what he said true?

Cheers guys.

Yeah I have noticed that, but think it's too expensive for me in all honesty, otherwise I'd be interested. Maybe after Christmas I can see if I can raise the extra, but certainly not beforehand :( I guess if it's not available for another 2 or 3 weeks I can always see what I can do in January if you haven't got a buyer lined up by then.

No worries, well its OVNO aswell, but yep, its not gonna able to be taken for about 3 weeks (so chrimbo then)

I'd imagine it'll still be up for grabs in Jan, I'll let you know! :D

I have seen quite a few cars with plastic studs holding the VIN plate on, I think it's quite normal. I think they were all UK models.

Oh right, the guy said it was an Import but he didn't seem to know much about cars anyway. He also had an NA Mr2 and knew nothing about it, so I had to tell him what revision it was and it's stats, he was only 21 and I think was buying cars for pose value rather than knowing about them. Interesting about the VIN plate, maybe I shouldn't have let that put me off, but even so, the V5 was still odd.

Please do, as I would be interested if I can raise the extra, especially being an owners club car you know it's been looked after. Hmm, actually I might as well look into seeing what I can do so I know either way.

It certainly has been looked after, i have a huge filee of reciepts and a large amount of other history!!

If you need any details gimme a call.........

Okey dokey, if I can raise the extra money needed I'll give you a bell and arrange to come up and see it, if I can't then I'll let you know anyway so you can strike me off your list of potential buyers.

Thanks very much, I'd appriciate that! :D

I always pay as much attention to the chap selling the car as I do to the car itself. If you don't like him, if you're not at his house, if he is iffy it's not worth the risk

I agree there, he was a young guy knew nothing about the car at all, which filled me with little confidence. It just didn't feel right, I seemed to know more about them than he did and I know very little! Just wasn't worth the risk, there was no history, no tale behind the car so I wouldn't have known what I was buying. Ah well, the hunt goes on and I'm sure I'll find the right zed for me soon enough.

Good move to walk away, l aways do so if there is anything that makes me feel uneasy.

Holding out for a black one! - If you see a good car get it, if it is really important to you then get a respray.

Wanted a black one (and still do) but found a good car with history from Japan that met every other criteria I had so I got a red one. Also paid over the odds for a car I was confident about rather than pay less for a dodgy one.
