Having paid quite a lot of money to a local mechanic for head gaskets and turbos replacement work, who normally does a good job ( on the mundane stuff anyway ) I noticed a lack of ummph when on boost. When I looked under the bonnet I found that there were two connectors left undone - I think they are AIV solenoid valve and EGR control solenoid valve but I dont know which is which! I also found that the air pipe from the EGR valve was not connected at the plenum and that there are two electrical connectors not connected to anything lying just above the EGR valve!!! I confronted the garage owner who apologised and said that the he had fired the guy that had put my engine back together and did not know where the connectors or the EGR pipe should connect to. HELP! I am hoping to borrow a digital camera at lunchtime and find a host and post up pictures of the connectors but in the meantime if anyone knows...

Thanks,

Ian.

Thanks,

Ian if you can get some pics mate it will be easy to tell you what goes where

Ryan

just above the EGR could be the the det sensor connector and one of the o2 sensors. Are the connectors identical?

I've just taken the photos and am trying to get em off the camera.

Vijay - they're not the O2 sensors because I traced those down to the manifolds. The two above the EGR are females of the same type that connect to the solenoid, one's yellow and one's white. The one at the front of the engine bay is the same type of connector as the O2 type - grey in colour. All of these come out of the main harness that runs round the back of the engine then along the side to the front. The pictures should make it a bit clearer.

Sounds to me like the idle valve connector and either FICD or auxiliary air valve connector. Have a look at the rear passenger side of the plenum for these valves, idle valve connector points back towards windscreen, auxiliary air valve points at the drivers wing....

What a pain posting photos is! Anyway, I previewed these once and when I returned to post everything had disappeared!

The first pic is of the two solenoids that I have connected the two loose connectors that were in close proximity - which one is which?

The second is of a small tube that just pokes out from under the plenum opposite the master cylinder of the ABS unit. I think this is where the pipe that is attached to the top of the EGR valve should be connected. See pic4.

The third is of the 'lone' connector that is just laying beside the Hicas reservoir.

The fifth is of the two unconnected plugs that are just sitting on top of the engine at the back and I can't see any matching place where they could go.

Ian those two connectors in your hand go at the rear of the engine on the passenger side directly behind cylinder 6 to the air idle valve the top one is the yellow one which will go to a black plug and the bottom of the two is the blue one which will go to the blue plug , both of these are in very close proximity to each other like about two inches, you may need to move the wiring loom a little to see

the othe single connector in your hand looks like the VTC connector , on that side of the engine at the rear there should be a white cable hanging down , this is right at the very rear under the upper cam cover you should be able to see that quite clearly just look for a white cable.

the pipe coming out of the underneath side of the plenam does indeed go to the EGR this should have a rubber pipe that connects it to the solenoids on the drivers side which is where your other two connectors are , from memory the lighter colour of the two is the top one.

Right if none of this makes any sense at all give me a ring 07968 166640

Ian,

Did you manage to get it sorted after we spoke last night

Hi Ryan,

Not all of it. I got an inline tube connector for the EGR to EGR solenoid - It appears that the upper of the two solenoids is the EGR one. I decided not to try to switch the two solenoid connectors over in case I lost those tiny springs! At lunchtime ( while there was some light ) I traced out the White cable for the VTC connector. There are two of these, each one exits from the back of each bank of the block and connects to the two larger grey coloured connectors which are held on brackets next to where I am holding the yellow and blue connectors at the top back of the engine in my picture. Is this correct? I would have to disconnect one of these to connect my 'lone' connector then where would the one that I disconnected go?

I tried looking down the back of the block between the block and the windscreen tray for the blue and yellow connectors and couldn't see a thing!! I will try tomorrow with a torch!

Thanks again for the help, I'll call you tomorrow.

Ian.
