Labour are bringing in new rules that will mean drivers doing 94mph in a 70 will now get 6 penalty points and £100 fine. This means if you get camera'd twice, when your'e doing around the average motorway speed, you will lose your license.

Fair or not? Any comments?

Feel better now chris? ;)

I agree with chris anyway. FOOOOKIN bastids :mac1:

British Motorways have a dated speed limit that badly needs to be increased. Im also a 90mph'ish Motorway cruiser, and it IMO it aint fast.

Read a couple of years ago that the AA were campaigning for a rise to 80mph, but never heard anything since.

90 mph isnt fast???? PMSL.... it doesnt feel fast, but christ have you ever not broken down on the motorway and seen how fast the lorrys seem to be going past at their very very very slow 60 ish mph. its fecking scary.

Speed is relative to your surroundings, 90 doesnt feel fast cos everyone around you is clogging along at roughly the same speed.

Dont get me wrong i dont stick to 70, allegedly 140 ish is my personal record on a private test track but to say 90 isnt fast is way way wrong.

Get a puncture at 90 and then see how slow it is!!!!

Don't agree with this shat!!!!!!!! Ive lived out in Germany and people are happy tonking along at 90 +. The goverment are quick enough to take on other euro rulings but whats happening here? I agree 90+ is quick but if you have a blow at 50 you still have as much of a chance of saying "ta-ra". Then again where do we stop the limit? On the autobarn there are restrictions at entry and exit points and if you get caught you seriously get your arse kicked but the rest of the barn is yours to do what you want. Same as usual "another road tax!!".. moan over!!

yuh gotta agree with scoops here, (f*ck no)

fair enough our cars are comfortable driving around at 100mph day in day out, and will most likely outbreak the highway code. However there are still cars permitted on our roads which do not drive like ours or handle like ours and really should not be allowed to go that fast. Its been proven that if you raise the speed limit to 80mph average traffic speeds will increase to 100+mph. Try sitting in an MG that can barely do 70mph on the motorway with lorry tyres towering over you and you will see what i mean.

However I do believe that driving conditions should be reviewed when giving out harsh points and bans. I usually sit with the needle just under 100 when on empty motorways.

shit that means i get 9 points

NOW tell me it aint worth having every laser/radar/jammer going illegal or not,

id rather have the fine for having them, than a brucie bonus (points make bans) :(

to be fair. We are all sitting here, hopefully, fairly good drivers in fairly well maintained cars but, and its a biggie, you have some doddery muppet in a clapped out old banger on the same road.

Now whilst I am happy doing well in excess of, I dont want mr dodder in his 19frozentodeath banger behind me doing it. or some batty boy in his tricked up nova (who has spent so much on his "bling" he cant afford to get the brakes sorted).

I agree that the limit is out of date, and that it should be raised, but on condition that if you use the higher speed limit, you have to take a more stringent test (cos lets face it, we did a 45 minute test nearly 20 yrs ago, that didnt involve motorways and that was the last time our driving was assessed, generally) and your car should have to undergo a proper inspection rather than just an mot and six monthly , not yearly. That way at least the people doing those speeds are reasonable drivers in reasonable cars.

Unless of course its me on me bike, in which case (due the far superior brakes on a bike, less mass to bring to a halt and the fact that bikers (generally) are better drivers) I should be allowed to update my personal best of a a fireblade "off the clock" :)

IMO 90mph isn't that fast .. not in the Z anyway. I was lucky enough to be a passenger on the autobahn and got a lift with someone who crahes at over 100 mph luckily we were four up and the car stayed on the ground, we span around six times, I told him to slow down but he wouldn't listen, after we crashed I decked him ... ****in **** ..

I am just sooooo sick and ****ing tired of all the timmy's on the road, driving at stupid slow speeds, even on motorways ...

All all comes down to experience, perception and bloody common sense ...

****ing country is turning into a nanny state .. they will get someone to wipe your arse as soon as you leave the front door soon ... ****ers

Why the concern over Nova drivers!? Let them get on with rapin' their cars at unlimitless speeds. Gets rid of em quicker LOL. Seroiusly, no matter what speed is set there will always be some dick head doing warp factor 6 in a nova, but that is there personal choice, they must know the limits of their car. The only way i can see any sensible result is restricting engine sizes like they do on motorbikes. Then again (don't mean to keep on about it!!) in Germany they have to go to night classes etc.. for about a year to get their licence so they know the concepts of driving, also they usulay learn to drive in quite a powerful car so when they do eventualy get there licence they have been put in all circumstances. They learn to drive and not just to pass a test!! Is that a good idea ? Its already starting with the hazard perseption test.

doesn't matter what rules/laws you bring in to stop nova dicks etc from

being a menace, it aint gonna stop them, problem is saying leave them to do themselves in, is they usually take loads of innocent victims with them:(

same as the way they keep going on about the new cameras in police cars instantly recognizing untaxed/insured cars, brilliant if they can get the twats of the roads, but do you seriously think if they are unisured they actually give a shit about being caught? in fact the minute they see a cop car now they know they are 99% sussed, so the chase is on.

the only way i can see to get the cars off the roads is to instantly confiscate

untaxed/uninsured and mot-less cars, but that aint gonna stop car thieves, cos if they pinch your car and it's not yet reported, then its not gonna show on a vr camera:(

so only answer is the death penalty for car robbers

Totally agree with billy inocent lives are lost daily sometimes due to your typical knob ed driving like a :xxx: with a shite and or stolen car

my vote is against 6 points per speeding ticket,i did 150mph the other day down a rare empty m5 lol

as someone said even 70 mph when your stood on the hard shoulder looks fast as feck

How about each driver is given a test to see at what speed they can drive safely at. You could pass at one speed and then as your ability grows you could add say a 90mph test.

I have taken a long time to learn how to drive fast and SAFE, it isn't easy. Technology that identifies your licence plate could also be used to identify your max speed.

there are pro's and con's for all schemes, but all we really need to do is pay attention more when we drive.

It's more dangerous driving to work when the school run is on than driving on the motorway .... un ****ing believable ....

Guess I did'nt word that very well. Yes 90mph is quick, 90mph is 90mph...but I dont feel that 90mph is too fast on a clear (or at least, not busy) Motorway...not fast enough to warrant a Ban if your caught twice.

30mph max in a 30 zone, 40mph in a 40 zone, and Im fairly strict with myself at that.......but on the motoway(conditions permitting) I find 90mph an acceptable cruising speed.

Bloody right .. as I said . it comes down to common sense. Which IMO is missing in most of the fookin idots on our roads ...

Yes the limit needs to be raised as the cars today are more advanced in all aspects i.e more power, traction, abs, safety etc etc....

But I do think the motorways need four lanes-just due to the sheer volume of traffic as compared to say 15/20 years ago.

As for the fines, no problem, if you get caught you pays your money!! but the points lark is just that-as you can take someones livelihood away in a couple of days!!-that sucks! :nono:

We have had two posts this week about folk killed on the roads.

Part of me says be harsh on speeders... the roads are there for everyone to get about in safety not for people to have a laugh in their sportscars.

If this saved some lives, then surely it's worth it? Or is getting somewere sooner and having a laugh in a fancy car more important than people's lives?

Equally there should be more coppers on the lookout for dangerous /drink drivers and they're the real problem... not someone going quick on an empty motorway.

I drive fast... I had a ZZR1200 off the clock in France and an indicated 175 on a GSX-R in this country so I guess I'd be a hipocrite if I said be harsh on speeders.

But sometimes 20mph in a 30 is too fast.

we aren't talking about speeding in built up areas mate.

I admit it. I do like driving my z and I like driving it as it should be driven, I dont go past schools etc ... at 40+ I drive sensibly when it donotes but I like going fast on the motorways, and I do.

I just think are laws need updating, especially speed limits on motorways.

How about each driver is given a test to see at what speed they can drive safely at. You could pass at one speed and then as your ability grows you could add say a 90mph test.

Totally agree, I drive fast all the time but as a result I concentrate more and react quickly, when the other half is in the car telling me to drive slower I dont concentrate and drive less confidently.

Its like a computer game the practice of driving fast and learning to expect the unexpected makes you more reactive.

An ability test is totally impossible really but a dam good idea!

Too true - speed feels different in different cars - a Micra doing 90 wud prolly be as scary as an Aston Martin doing 150.

Crash at 90, then you will agree it is fast !!

Big failing with speed limits is no account taken for road conditions (exact location/other cars/weather/time of day/vehicle condition/vehicle type/skills of driver etc.)

Fair or not? One thing to say...nothing is fair under this govt. FFS!

2 Jags Prescott, blind man Blunkett and w@nk face Brown! Oh and bugger lugs Blair as the head...what's fair about that? Get Maggie out of retirement MO FO's! ;)
