Rear Transmission Oil Leak

Oh dear, I went to ATS at Chesterfield this morning to get a tyre sorted as well as my tracking (which is loads better now).

While the car was on the ramp, me and the bloke were having a good look around the rear end, when I notice oil which was virtually black and very smelly leaking slowly from a small pipe, the bloke at ATS tells me its coming from the rear transmission, what does this mean, is this a major job, expensive etc. please somebody tell me this is not terminal.

Regards

JOHN

Manual or Auto?

Is your car UK or Jap spec?

If it's UK & Auto then I guess it's the oil cooler to the diff - probably not major (new hose, say), but get it fixed pronto..

You don't want your diff running dry of oil and siezing up... Not fun!

It's a Uk manual

Hi John,

I replaced the rear two oil seals on mine a couple of months after buying it. You're not wrong about the smell - Old tranny oil is well nasty smelling stuff!!

Its dead easy to change the oil seals. The most annoying part of the process is unbolting the two drive shafts and tying them out of the way.

The oil seals were about £8 each. Took 20 mins to get them out, 2 mins putting them in.

Send me a mail or have an MSN chat, if you want any advise (simon.b.williams@talk21.com)

Erm....I may have got my words a tad minced before! Doh... I thought you were talking about the differencial.

So...rear oil seal on the tranny..piece of piss to change too, can't remember how much at the moment though. Taking the exhaust off, to get to the prop shaft was the only part of the process that turned the air blue smile.gif
