Cheers

I believe AdamR's girlfriend is a chemist.

What is the "drug" that you are looking for?

Its not a natural Viarga is it? ;)

Cheers Stu :D and Craig.

The drugs called DDAVP/Desmopressin (Minirin). Basically it's for my dog but to get this drug through my vets (or even over the internet from the US) is gonna cost me a fortune, possibly over £300 a month..............................

Cheers to anyone who can help :)

Not that I've got anything against trying to save a bob or two (or even a pooch :D ) but it is a really really bad idea to give any drug formulated for humans to a pet. The name may be the same (and the active ingredient) but the rest of the stuff in the pill / injection is not the same. And working out the dosage is not as easy as working out the weight ratio - physiology and metabolism is way different.

Be very very careful - in fact, don't do it unless you are a vet. Good luck with the pooch, vijay.

Hi Gio,

It's my vets who have prescribed this medication for her. I was just hoping to be able to find it in a nautural substance that my JD could consume.

Hi Vijay,

that sounds fine to me (but then I'm no vet so what do I know ;) . Might be worth trying the Royal Veterinary College or RSPCA or PDSA - or even Kennel Club. Just to get extra info or source to back up what your vet says.

Cheers - Gio

Lol when my cat got stapled back together after loosing its face, following the surgery it was on human dose prescription only painkillers!!!

I'll ask Vikki about it for ya

Right just spoken to Vikki - is your dog wetting the bed a lot?

Apparently its an anti diuretic - to reduce urine production, and unfortunately there are none available as over the counter medicines, they're all prescription only.

How did I know when I say Mr Duffs name I'd be accused of p***ing the bed - lol.

Cheers Adam. Yeah, my dog's drinking way too much and therefore wetting (she's an older dog anyway). Would Vikki know if the actual ingrediants can be found in any natural substances/foods?

Cheers

ADH is the naturally occuring hormone in the body that does the same thing, (anti diuretic hormone), it is controlled by the pituitary gland,

i wouldnt recommend it for the dog without medical advice, but salt and creatine cause the body to retain water, (more salt = more water needed by body to balance)

if she is overweight also that could effect the gland i believe.

Hi Mike,

No she's not overweight. She's always stayed slim as she's a German Shepard with bad hips :( She's had all the tests (£600 worth) and it points to this ADH hormone as you've said. The drops seem to be working (she's drinking less) but I'd love to find an alternative (I could spend the £300 a month on the Z..........or drink :D )

take her water bowl away?

sorry thats mean... :mac1: :mac1: :nelson:

Hi Vijay

Vikki did some more research and apparently Desmopressin starts from £21.90 for the lowest strength on a private vetinary prescription (ie, the vets give you a script, and you take it to the chemists as you normally would)

So unless its uber uber strength for big dogs, it sounds a touch dear.

Thanks Adam (and Vikki). It's a 2.5ml bottle and it says "Nasal drops, solution 100 micrograms in 1ml"

Vijay

could be a case of the old vet making a quick buck, lets face it they are bloody expensive... reminds me of the joke with the cat scan and lab report.....

David,

I couldn't agree more. I'm sure at times they know they got me in a corner and I have no choice but what can I do?

Vijay

Homebrew shops do a variety of bungs etc - any use? ;) LOL

Sorry, i know this is a serious matter ;)

I'll check for you - get back to you on monday.

Desmopressin is a hormone anti diuretic and is used for fluid regulation. ei stops you pissing. It has other uses, but as to what its natural substitue is I have no diea but I do know they systhaesis it from rain forests.

This is what me old man said:

No idea about getting this drug cheap. The internet is usually the best place.

However it is used for humans as well, principally for bed wetting in children. The dose is 200 microgrammes at bedtime for a child, say 30kg. !00 and 200 ug tabs are made.

Your friend may therefore be able to get this cheaply. It is made by Ferring and the name of the tablets are either DDAVP or Desmotabs. There is also a nasal spray. 90 100ug tabs cost £48.90 and the nasal spray is £10.45.

There is also a spray made by Norgine and marketed as Nocutil, and one by Pliva marketed as Presinex .

Desmopressin has a long duration of action.
