i was thinking of having an exhaust made up that comes from the turbos then out from the side of the car rather than all the way to the back. Same principal as the racing/drag car exhasut as it obviously get rid of the gases quicker. can this be done on the 300zx and is it safe to do?? any help appreciated

not sure of the legality of side exit pipes on the passenger side (burning pedestrians legs!)?

Dunno about the legality, but they were popular for a while on the Renault 5 GTT's - generally silencerless, too..

Speaking of which - don't both the Viper and new Merc thing have side exit exhausts? So they must be legal...

would be bloody noisy!!! if you have a powerflow place near you i'm sure they can make one for a good price.

Yeah, I think it is possible but if you are gonna use it as a regular driver it ain't gonna be very practical. The main issue would be getting it quiet enough as you wouldn't wanna run it withh straight through pipes as it will not pass an MOT, however if want to just use the car for racing then you will probably be OK even though your Turbo seals WILL NOT LAST VERY LONG AT ALL DUE TO THE TOTAL LACK OF BACK PRESSURE....

RC Developments use this idea on thier high powered EVO :)

Have had a completely silenceless system since I've had the car and the turbo seals haven't gone yet !!!

Have now added two rear boxes though cause it was the loudest thing I've heard !!!

thinking of gettin side skirts with 4 x 2.5" holes in with heat shields so i can have the 4 pipes out the side. Still a cat back exhaust though.

Just thinking of the actual application side of things ... could be tricky in the Z as you'd need to pass the exhaust pipes over the central chassis supports which would put them too close to the road to go over any sort of bump/dip/curb.

there is a company that does this, the exhaust exits through side skirts just in front of the rear tyre,

i've been toying with the idea......

What company is that mike??

How do McLaren do it on the new SLR as the pipes exit just behind the front wheels I believe.

I wouldn't have thought there was much room to put cats/silencers and still have them exit so soon after the wheels.

Unique Autosports offer an exhaust that does this just as a thought - although they are in Australia.

SLR - it uses a series of bends and lengths of tubing containing cats and silencers before exiting. The bends also provide a certain amount of back pressure required to slow the exit speed of the gasses. Contrary to popular belief, a completely free flowing exhaust can actually loose you power because the exit speed of the gasses is too high. There is a certain amount of back pressure required for optimum performance.

Ohh a good old back pressure debate again :D

I think last time we came to the conclusion that unless its a tuned pipe, free flowing is most desirable.

2 strokes are a different matter entirely ;)

what about a catback exhaust coming to the side instead of a straight through ?? therefore leaving cats in place

TBH i know very little about stuff like this, but i remember watching something on Top Gear when the Z3 (M series one) came out. The said although it had the same engine as the M3 it delivered less power because the exhaust was so short?

I might be talkin crap, but thats ok. :D

Oh yeah, more Top Gear. The Viper with the side exit exhausts set the side skirts on fire.

Side skirts on fire was awesome :D Like I say, a TUNED exhaust is different ;)

is there a method for calculating exhaust gas flow? or a way of measuring?

I'm assuming that if a standard exuahst allows 1 litres of gas out every second then a modified exhaust no matter its twists and turns as long as it emits same ammount of gas will give same performance?

Who knows what exactly is best ? but Hey, if it looks good do it
