Hi, I have looked on the FAQ and not found it, so how do I check the basic, static or what ever you call it, ie when the eingine is at tickover. Thanks

you have to do it with the engine running either on a consult or timing strobe gun you will need to run a piece of ignition lead down towards the spark plug with coil still on number one or try to get a reading off of the coil connector plug ...you can buy an adapter...

The Conzult will always give you a reading of 15 TDC so do not take this as your correct timing

As ZMaster has said you will need to get a timing strobe and take the reading off cylinder one or the timing wire on the PTU Loom , next to the PTU

ConZult would be usefull to chack that the ECU is actually trying to achieve base timing of 15deg. The car must be up to operating temperature and the idle must be steady to get a proper reading. Also there must be no faults with the car so do an ecu diagnostic first...

OK, thanks all, what should it be? 15 before TDC? And is there anyone near me with a consult do you know who would be willing to help, for a small payment of course. Thanks

tickover - 750rpm

make sure the aircon is off too as this will raise the revs ;)

You need to check the timing at idle (~750rpm according to duffers), and you'd need a timing light as well as a conZult (the conzult is just to double check that the ECU is actually trying to get 15deg BTDC, and not 25deg BTDC which is the next step up, otherwise you end up setting the base timing wrongly, AFAIK).

I've got a conZult and I'm not too far away, but I'm afraid I haven't got a timing light, which makes me a bit useless :( Know anyone with a timing light?

[edit: coz my memory is crap :) ]

My son thinks we have one, I will have a look and get back to you if thats OK? Sounds a bit like a team effort...

No worries :)

Yeah spot on! This is why all sensors must be working properly and the engine running smoothly at 750rpm ;)

Aye - I suppose you could actually set the base timing to whatever the ConZult is reading (so if it's reading 25deg, set the timing to 25deg).. but.. it wouldn't be advised, I'd have thought.

Which reminds me to find out how to get the latest version of the software, as mine is somewhat old..

See, sometimes I actually post things that are a) right, and b) make sense..
