Insomnia again....

The zed has gone and I am facing another boring hours drive to work. I can't really afford to run another car but maybe in a few months I will be able to get something cheap to muck about with. Has anyone got any recomendations- if I was looking for something cheap (less than £1500, perhaps even less than £1000), what would be a good bet? I'd like it to be as powerful as possible, rear wheel drive, or maybe go-cart-like drive and small, but definately as powerful as possible. It would be good if it easy to work on so that I could start tinkering without worrying about completely ballsing up the engine, but reliability wouldn't be as much of a worry as I would definately only be messing with it at weekends whenever I had a little bit of cash to spare.

Is there such a thing- maybe an S13? Z31? Has anyone got any ideas?

s13 is the only real kind of powerful RWD for your money pick them up for less than a grand and they go so sideways :D not that reliable but for less than a grand you cant grumble

greg

definitely an S13. you can pick one up for less than a grand and they are well good fun. little bit laggy but once you get going......YEEHA!

Have a look on the autotrader website, bet there's a few

Ive seen silvia's kitted out with some serious mods for around 1500 and they are LOADS of fun!! look rubbish though

S13 or Mk1 MR2 - you could maybe pick up the SC version for about £1500 if you're lucky.. they're definitely small and gokart like (just try to get one that isn't too rusty.. ;)) - heck, they can be had for £500 if you're lucky..

I can vouch for the fact that mk3 Supra turbos can be a lot of fun, albeit rather thirsty :)

I had this dream where my other half secretly bought my zed off the garage and I go home and there it is on the drive. I didn't happen though. I would like a car a cheapo strictly going sideways fun car for not much money, but whether that will happen or not I don't know. The S13 could be an idea. Is there anything else rear wheel drive (that still goes). Are Mk III supras that cheap? I will have a look in the autotrader, but my eye keeps getting drawn to zeds and NSXs. I would like to try an NSX, or a really late model 300. Dream on dream on...

 Dont hold back mate :D

lmao, i had one when I was 17, thought I was the mutts nuts!! it was black and pointy, I even got the nickname david hasselhoff for a short while!! Looking back I was a cock and the car was fast and fun but looked naff! :D

cost 1100 to buy back then and 900 to insure tpft!!!

If you're looking for something that goes sideways, then the S13 will be much better than the MR2. The MR2 will probably handle better though

S13 For deffo

I saw an MR2 '90 N/A go for £1100 on ebay  looked a good un an all, mot'd n taxed was tempted. but I'm fairly certain the missus would have stabbed me in my sleep.

Cant go wrong with a S13 tho :)

Are Mk III supras that cheap?

If someone wanted to give me £1500 for mine, I certainly wouldn't stop them!

Poor thing is just sat there - I would like to turn it into a track car, but there's so much I want to do to my Z first...

Yeah I would vouch for the Mk III Soup Turbo aswell, I had one before the Z and it was cracking. They go for silly money now but 235 bhp and they go well.

We had an S13 and it was OK for a while then blew up properly, doubt if I'd have another but would have an S14...they're nice! ;)

You could try a celica GT 4*4 Turbo. You can pick them up quite cheap these days. Was actually thinking of getting one myself.

I want to have one that I can strip out completely- have it as minimal as possible. I won't be worried about knackering it up, so hopefully be OK to thrash a bit more. An S13 sounds like a good bet at the moment- I should be able to find something at reasonable money (whenever that might be) and it would be good for a bit of sideways. I had thought first of an old Supra, but an S13s going to be a bit more nimble than that, won't it?

;) Er...This won't be popular...but there are loads and loads of K/L/M Reg BMW 3 Series's about with 110k for that sort of money. My Dads goes like a snorter and, if you stay away from the main dealers, they are cheap as chips to fix.

Dads car got 157k and its gizzards are still as strong as a Tennant's Super Brew. No real rust either

Chris (JapTraitor) Davies :duffer:

DEf go for a E30 bmw 325i Would be an animal Trying to keep it in a straight line is a mission and a half! had so much fun when I had mine.

Or go for a 4ltr jag look on ebay mate there is loads going from 500 up

....... I had thought first of an old Supra, but an S13s going to be a bit more nimble than that, won't it?

No, in stock form the Mk3 Supra turbo will whip an s13 in a straight line. (0-60 in 6.1, 100 in under 16 and a 50-70 time not too far behind a ZX).

They don't handle badly either - OK they're a bit lardy but with decent springs and tyres they do grip well.

I had 2 before my ZX and loved them to bits. you can pick one up quite cheaply now - average £1-1.5K but good ones still fetch a bit more. Fensport do some decent tuning mods at reasonable prices. Get the head gasket sorted (only weakness - head bolts were not tightened down enough in the factory, consequently if this is not corrected early the HG will go around 60-70K miles)

Very reliable too.....

Richard :D

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Plus the Mk3 Supra has that whole 80's cool thing about it. Get one and you'll immediately have the urge to don a pair of Ray Bans and go for long night-time drives, looking a bit peeved, whilst listening to "Crockett's Theme".

True!! :D

My last one was an imported black GT ltd edition targa-top. Came with a full LCD dash just like K.I.T.T. too - how much more 80's cool do you need ;) :hyper:
