My Mrs took her Polo (1999, 1.0L) in for sevrive MoT. (This should be the Mrs Craig David help forum!).

They want to replace both front discs as they're pitted.

They replaced them two years ago and she's done less than 10,000 miles since then.

This seems far to short a life for a brake disc.... any idea how long they should last? She's a slow driver but the car is parked outside. Any idea what causes pitting?

Thanks chaps!

most german cars use quite soft discs on their cars. this does cause them to wear (& corrode :( ) quicker, but allows the pads to grip better.

they should last a lot longer than that tho, sounds like its a round towner with gentle braking - not good for discs

A friend had her Golf GTi serviced regularly by VW, one service she was told she needed new pads and discs, she said to leave it as she suspected this was wrong. And it was, the next garage said discs were fine and pads only 40% worn. Make of that what you will. Another friend had an N reg Punto serviced by local Fiat dealer (dont ask me why) 4 weeks after passing MOT at same garage, only to be told it needed £600.00 worth of repairs, including brakes that were in serious need of looking at. So how did it pass MOT? Again, make of that what you will.

Less than 5000 miles a year wont wipe off the rust that grows from the edge of the wiping surface. If you get under you'll prolly see the discs look even worse from the inner surfaces. Got to use it more or garage it
