O/S Front Wheel Squeak

Hello Guys and Girls,

As you may know I had a expensive job done on my new bushings, while it was in pieces I asked them to look at the offside front wheel where there was a squeaking metal noise especially when turning right, the noise is intermitant and seems louder at lower speed, or maybe I just can't hear it. The garage didn't find anything, and they said they couldn't hear it either, so any ideas??

Any help gratefully received biggrin.gif

Is it not your tyre hitting the small plastic mud gaurd on one of the suspention arms?

Could be the bonnet catch sqeaking - this sounds quite possible because it is more common at slow speed.

The U shaped catch that is attched to the bonnet wears out which then means it doesn't hold the bonnet tightly shut. This can be cured by wrapping insulation tape around the worn part to make it better again smile.gif

You can also 'wind up' the bonnet rest rubbers, that has the effect of raising the bonnet slightly and stopping the catch moving around.

Is also true Andy but too much and the car will look daft and the bonnet will start to move around when at speed.....

True, but it worked for me and it doesn't look noticably different.

That was what I was gonna suggest craig but remembered somebody saying that all the adjustment had been taken up so had to resort to using tape to 'rebuild' the thickness of the catch. I actually thought it was you who told me this but am obviously wrong biggrin.gif

Thanks for the suggestions, tried the bonnet thingy, but the noise is still there, seems to be coming from the inside part of the wheel. I've checked out the plastic mud gaurd and that checks out too. So now what???

I think maybe squeak was the wrong word, maybe metal on metal rubbing would describe it better!

Any more suggestions??

Regards

JOHN

Are the brake pads all good ? Can you see inner and outer ?

Andy

brake pads and disc are only a couple of months old

JOHN

Is there copper grease on the backs of the pads and are the proper shims in place between the pads and the pistons. Sometimes the pads can vibrate or chatter and it makes a squealing sound. The shims and grease usually stop that.

OK then now I'm running out of ideas.... Possibility I suppose of it being the wheel bearing on its way.... Oh, just had another thought - it could be the guard rubbing on the back of the brake disc - it is only thin sheet metal and is easily bent - if it touched the disc I suppose it would make the described noise...

Andy
