I finally got round to popping into my local main dealer to get my new key blank cut. They told me they can't retrieve my key code as my car is an import and they only link into the uk systems. Anyone else encountered this or are they just being awkward?

I would just go and get it cut at a normal key cutting place but my current (valet) key is a bit bendy and I'm concerned I would end up with a shiny new key that doesn't actually work!

Cheers

When I had my spares done at Nissan Widnes, they used the manual cutting machine to guess it.

I'd try another dealer If I were you.

Getting a copy of the valet key may not be what you need !

Seem to remember reading that its the profile of the blank rather than the cutting that makes the difference between a valet and a normal key. Is that not the case? I've left the blank in the car so I can't compare them at the moment!

Not sure, but you could be right. In theory the valet key should not open the glove box lock, presume that everything else should work though.

over time with anything in live wear on things happpen! as with your key if you have a badly warn key your going to get anouther warn key cut

if your key for the door is the same for the ignition take a barrel of the door preferably passenger door lock,as this is less used take to a locksmith not a keycutter lol and they can make a key to the barrel of the wafers inside that way you have a new key.

nissan blank dat12 also used on subarus have a habit of wearing very thin loosing the shoulder getting a copy is difficult with these blanks at times so dont leave it to long as it may break of in the lock HTH

both valet keys and normal keys are cut exactly th same, its th profile of the keys that is different. th slot in the valet key is wider

i had both cut from a dodgy spare (that i could pull out of the ignition while driving!!) and they work perfectly and wher they are supposed to work

OK, cheers for the advice folks. I think I'll take my chances with a key cutting place. If it doesn't work, the tenner I paid for the blank is only going to be a drop in the ocean compared to the money I've wasted on that car

On the subject of locks, how difficult is it to replace the entire set of locks on a zed? My driver door doesn't match the rest of them. Its a minor niggle but wouldn't mind sorting it with a full set of locks if its easy enough.

Cheers

not hard to replace the locks just time consuming, door handles are a bit of a pain to get out and take about half an hour per side. not done the ignition myself though...

best bet would be to get a full set from a car thats being broken i'd have thought.
