We did some updates on one of our webservers, to make it faster, more reliable and safer. All went well except for about 40 people who could not get on to the site. Of course they phones customer support for help.

We where very puzzeled as to why a small number of people where having trouble. Then I thought to have a look at what ISP they where using.

Guess how many of the 40 where on AOL?

38.

The other 2 we fixed for the people, deleting temp files, updating bookmarks and such.!

Why is AOL such a fecking ****er?

I said to my boss that we should stop wasting time on trying to get these people's connection to us to work as it is an AOL problem and not ours. They should phone AOL with their problem.

Why do people use AOL?

Does any one else here dispise AOL as much as me?

Stu I don't dispise it,I would just never download it on my PC

Yep, AOL are evil, horrible, hideous - etc.. Should be banned ;)

Not only AOL that have these kinds of problems though - remember not so long ago when MS released a patch for IE that broke quite a lot of secure web sites? (like IF's online banking for one).. Oops MS ;)

AOL are still evil though.

Same reason people use BT as their ISP (who also suck IMHO) - Because people who know nothing about computers are taken in by all the flashy huge budget and usually highly misleading (like AOL's "Unlike other ISPs we don't have a download limit" - makes it sound like everyone else does, doesn't it?) advertising (and mailshotting) that most ISPs simply can't afford..

Should be banned, like I say ;)

Sadly, my folks just went with BT as their ISP, despite me telling them not to - I await their first calls when emails fail to turn up etc..

Lol - "AOL, the VD of ISPs"

heh I have never had the displeasure of having AOL myself but they buggered up enough computers in the mid '90s, as a support engineer made my life a misery!

The internet is generally getting dumber, these days it doesn't really matter what ISP they are on,

If i did an upgrade that effected AOL users like that I would be slaughtered ;)

Maybe I don't know where to look, but in a non-cabled area, I struggle to find anyone else giving 1MB broadband for 30 quid apart from BT.

Although the buggers are putting on a 30Gb Up and down limit next year! Have to change then.

Everyone above AOL is cheaper - though the only ones I'd recommend are PlusNet (good until you need their support desk, d'oh) and Nildram.

Price isn't everything though, and now Zen have just reduced their prices, Zen Internet come highly recommended (http://www.zenadsl.co.uk)

Once again, I got to say that I have been with AOL for nearly ten years and never experienced any of the problems quoted. From their original dial-up to their broadband service, have always found them to be good, have tried a few other dial ups (from my laptop when I travel) but keep coming back to AOL.

Jock try getting onto http://www.totesport.com and see if you can get on.

Some people are having trouble logging on to the site. Some are just having trouble loading the site

i have to admit Freeserve were always quite good - I paid £27.99 for unlimited 512kbps access. Then Wanadoo come along, tell me nothing's changed, but start offering 1.1Mbps access (albeit 6 gig limit) for £22.99 and didnt even think to bl00dy tell me!!! charming!
