My daily driver is an Escort 1.4 on a G plate.

It has suddenly started overheating. I can drive for about 10 minutes before the temprature reaches the red. I have checked the water and oil and they are fine, all thought the water when checked after a run is really hot!.

Does this sound like the water pump has failed?. Or maybe I should just run some rad flush through it?. (or maybe I should just get another daily driver :D )

What do you think?

Thanks in Advance

Worth checking the water pump mate. I guess you have checked for leaks etc.

Is the fan coming on? and have you checked that the coolant is recirculating?

Sorry I can't be more help.

Thanks for the reply mate.

The fan is deffo coming on. Don't think there is a leak as the coolant level is not going down.

How would I check the coolent is recirculating?.

Cheers

If you can see the fluid level nicely in the radiator you can remove the cap and start the engine. Once it gets to operating temp you may be able to see the water circulating in the rad filler cap area. If you can see it recirculating, then it probably isn't your water pump.

It could be a failed thermostat that has stuck closed (don't know if escorts have a fail safe thermo or not) or it could be partially open but not enough to allow efficient cooling.

I am no expert on this and I am sure someone with a bit more technical knowledge would be able to help much better .. just trying to help out a bit mate.

If you have recently changed your coolant, then it could be as simple as an air lock in the system. Don't know if you have though.

If you have did you put the correct ratio of antifreeze / water?

Sure Andy could be much better help than me on this.

Thanks for all your advice Chris. You have far more knowledge than me.

I am not just a tight git (well maybe a little) but I just like fixing things for myself.

I topped it up with about 1/2 litre of water but not sure how much diffderence that would make the mix?. I will take a look tonight and see if it's recurculating.

I might drain the coolant and start from fresh.

Thanks again

No worries mate .. give the rad a good flush once you have drained the coolant. Get all the crap out of it as it could be something silly like that blocking it up.

Nice one Chris. I will give this a shot over the weekend.

Check the fan belt :D as the water pump could have gone. also check the thermostat.
