A number of you guys recommend Houghtons so I thought I'd give them a go with my old 91 200SX...

I'm currently paying abuot £340 with Elephant.... Houghtons wanted abuot £470 :nono:

God knows what the premium would be if I had a 300ZX worth say 3 times as much!

Neil why don't you ring up Houghton and ask them, it seems you need to have this discussion with Houghtons?

I think the vast majority of members on here are happy with houghtons knowledgable service and prices, and if you work in the insurance industry you should know that no insurers can keep every niche of customers happy!

I have... Hence some of the comments in my posts...

I'm not criticizing Houghtons in anyway, just facinated by the fact the premiums of two vehicles (which are somewhat akin) are nigh on the same, when one is clearly worth far far more, and is far far faster :)

Elephant insured my import for 475.00 but I went to Haughtons because of all the mods I added and it still worked out cheaper.

That's very good! What's the value of the vehicle and your mileage/year etc?

Is it your main vehicle?

.....

Here is an example from Houghtons...

91 200SX worth £2000 - Approx £470

94 300ZX worth £6000 - Approx £550 ........

But the difference between quotes is negligible, when you look at it like this;

The age is irrelivent, as the body parts to repair a '89 Z32 compared to a '94 are indeed the same, as would be for a S13 of differing ages. So comparing the age and 'value' is pointless, as one persons value will differ from someone elses.

Well, when I was with elephant I valued it at 6K, 47,000 miles, excellent condition about 10,000 miles per annum.

At Haughtons it is on a classic policy with limited mileage as I have a daily driver.

But with the modifications that have been done since I think Haughtons offer a fantastic deal.

Sorry, don't understand your point?

Yes, the years will have litte bearing on the matter, but then I didn't suggest they would.

But the value is not pointless. Your vehicle is insured for fire and theft remember. If the SX in the example was subject to this (or completely written off), you'd get something around £1500-2000 for the SX, but with the ZX, I'd get £5000-6000 for example.

That means the insurance company is footing an extra risk of around £4000.

This along with the general more expensive repairs the 300 would be subject too, and the fact it is a far faster vehicle you would have thought would have beefed up the different a fair degree... More than just 20% :)

Ahhhh! That clouds the issue a lot then! The fact the 300 isn't your main vehicle?!

In my examples so far the vehicle has always been the sole/main vehicle.

I dont think anyone knows what your point is now lol, it has changed a few times ;)

Yes - it is surprising that the quotes are so close, but there are other factors than just the cars as you know

I got a quote from them for the following car,

1991 UK TT,

5000 miles,

Classic policy,

With the following Mods:

Uprated Intercoolers,

555cc Injectors,

A'PEXi airfilter,

Exhaust,

17 Inch Alloys,

Traction Control,

Lightened Pulley,

Boost Controller,

Chipped ECU,

Painted Purple.

I got quoted £630 (ish) for being 24 or £450(ish) if I was 25 (Which I am in 2 months, but can I wait 2 months :()

That is a very good quote considering the mods and my age.

I thought my point had been -- WHOA! Look how expensive Horghtons are insuring a 200 compared to 300s :)

As you probably know, insurance as a rule is done from loads and loads of tables:-

X points on your license? Add a loading.

Dodgy post code? Add a loading.

Certain age groups will also get a loading.

However, at the heart of it is one massive table with every vehicle known to man in it with a base (start) premium. With my details obviously being identical for both quotes at Houghtons, this brings the difference in premiums (or lack of them) just down to this one table (really). The start premiums for the two vehicles must be very similar.

Considering one of them is basically on the verge of super car performance, and the other can't really claim to that, that's quite amazing... Hence this topic :)

That sounds very good... What are the limitations/requirements of the "classic policy"?

Can you not just get two months insurance? ie: There is nothing stopping you cancelling your insurance in two months and then restarting it again at the new lower premium!?

There are usually penalty costs when you do that though :(

Be worth looking at/asking about though... Might be a months premium or something...

Sorrry to be totally uncontructive

But I think its all pants, I know some old git who ran a ford escort into a ferrari n still pays naff all for his insurance.

True... But, everyone's premium still had the "risk" of us writing off a £200,000 car and incurring £100,000 legal bills.

You car may only be worth £100, but your insurance won't truly reflect that :)

For this old git, there are a million others all paying there premuims, who don't crash into Ferrari's - Hence overall the Insurance company cover their costs and make a profit :)

If they realised a particular car or age group was more liable, they'd "load" it. ie: Young drivers are more of a risk, so they pay extra.

Neil are you actually going to buy a 300?

Doh! I knew that really I'm just poking my nose in.

OK OK

1st you were moaning that Insyrance companies were quoting over the odds, now your listing the reasons why!!

Going back to the muppet link....................

Neil are you actually going to buy a 300?

I'm looking...

My 200 is in beautiful condition and has just had its first big expense (£500). Nothing mechanical - rusty sill under the car, which I've just had completely re-done... Apart from that its been fabulous for nearly 10 years!

200.jpg

It's obviously also cheap to run, insure and service.

Anyway, I'm looking for a pretty special 300 to make me move. It would have to be in very good nick, low mileage etc etc... I've looked at a couple which were horribly bad condition!

Each week I'm looking though... Also alot seem to be automatics!!

Think your too late chunk it all got a bit tense and everyones got upset and gone!

I suggest you re-read it then as you obviously missed the point...

Neil I'd do you a part-ex on mine as I'll be after an S13 when I sell up. But mine needs bits doing which would probably put you off at the moment. Nothing major, just annoying niggles.
