A number of you guys recommend Houghtons so I thought I'd give them a go with my old 91 200SX...

I'm currently paying abuot £340 with Elephant.... Houghtons wanted abuot £470 :nono:

God knows what the premium would be if I had a 300ZX worth say 3 times as much!

But that's just crazy! So my 1991 200SX, doing 4000 miles a year, with me with a completely clean license, in my 30s, and having never made a claim in my life, is more of a risk than you with your 300?

Its club insurance Neil, they are our official club insurers

I understand that, but none the less they're not running a charity ;)

I can't understand why my SX13 is deemed more of a risk than a 300XZ... Standard car (apart forom alloys), no points, no accidents, clean licence for 10+ years...

Maybe they just don't like you?

as you say they are NOT running a charity , also a lot of people are running Z's as 2nd cars again reduces the price, ive got 3 cars with them and well chuffed:)

yes and we receive a discount as its club insurance also.

Still confused though... I only do 4K a year...

From what people seem to be suggesting here, if I had a 300ZX as my main vehicle (instead of my 200SX), I'd be looking to spend £400-500 with Houghtons?

Agreed, but I suspect it's like 5-10%?

Bottom line is, its a Nissan 300 club, and they are offering discounts for nissan 300 owners. Are you really that surprised?? Life must be very difficult for you, if you are.

Why dont you get a quote then Neil? Instead of speculating what it might be then complaining about your own speculations??

Yes I am surprised... The 200 and 300 are much the same animal, with the 300 obviously being fast and far more expensive to maintain :)

Hence me being (very) surprised that a 300 worth far more than my SX, and being in most terms a greater risk, can be seemingly insured for less.

As I work within the insurance industry to a certain degree I have an interest in this...

The 200 and 300 are much the same animal

Really!

its not about what's worth more, its about the service being offered to 300zx owners. So it should come as no surprise that, as you are not a 300zx owner, that you dont get offered the same service. Simple really.

Don't split hairs for Christ sake.

My comment was - "The 200 and 300 are much the same animal, with the 300 obviously being faster and far more expensive to maintain"

They are both two 2+2, rear wheel drive, turbo'd, made by Nissan. The 300 should as a rule obviously be more expensive to ensure than a 200.

Except when offered under a discount scheme for nissan 300zx's.

Here is a simple quiz to help you understand:

I own a 200sx and want to insure it. Should I?

a) LOOK FOR A SPECIFIC POLICY OFFERED TO 200SX OWNERS

would it make you happy if Houghtons made an exception and insured you as a non-member, just so that you can pay more and stay in-line with your theory?

personally, i really don't care how much my insurance on a 300 compares to any other car as long as i can get it as cheap as possible

Always nice to see intelligence and good natured conversation instead replaced with sarcasm...

My point is the two vehicles are obviously somewhat similar. With mine being less of a risk as its cheaper and not such high performance etc.

Yet Houghtons in effect actually charge about the same if not more of a 200 than a 300.

Interesting don't you think?

ps: Please try and keep this good natured!

Neil did you try Adrian Flux on the SXOC board?

They offer Discounts to SXOC registered 200 owners. Pretty much in the same way Houghtons offers Discounts to ZX owners.

Why not call and ask houghton? i'm sure you will get an answer from them, we can only speculate

Neil, I am always good natured.

The point of the above quiz was to highlight what, to me, is the flaw in your argument. No one is disagreeing with you that the 300zx should be more expensive. But the point we are, good naturedly, trying to make is that the policy offered by Houghtons is biased towards the 300. So despite all opinions to the contrary, they will offere a cheaper quote on 300s. It is like complaining because a part built specifically for the 300 wont fit your car, of course it wont, its not for your car. It really isd a no-brainer, and for you to argue the point is well........pointless.

In a good natured stylee

Interesting don't you think?

it's only interesting if a company not affiliated to 300zx.co.uk quoted more for a 200 than a 300

or

you simply don't understand/accept the fact that th quote for a 300 from houghton is discounted

Again with the sarcasm... Sheesh...

My view is different - I suspect because I probably know more about the insurance industry than you (and therefore have a somewhat invested interest). Anyway...

Here is an example from Houghtons...

91 200SX worth £2000 - Approx £470

94 300ZX worth £6000 - Approx £550 (ignoring membership discount which I can go into if you like)

The difference I think you'll agree is actually quite small as a %age of:-

a) The likelyhood of accidents happening. (100hp difference?)

b) The cost of repair. (300ZX parts more expensive?)

c) The actual value of the vehicles. (Three times the cost?)

I'm simply amazed that they are so close. If/when I get a 300ZX Houghtons will definately be on my list of potential Insurers...

However, it will be VERY interesting to see how Elephant equate the above risk(s). Houghtons rate it as less than 20%... This being the case Elephant would insure me for less than £400... But I suspect that wouldn't be the case :)
