slapped my new PTU on, she starts ok now (with a bit of persuading cos the CAS plug keeps falling off, (didnt know it wouldnt start with this unplugged??))

 

When she is running im not getting a spark on all six, I think I've tracked it down to the middle left (as you look at the car standing in front of it) cylinder, not sure what number it is, sorry..

 

anyhooo, I was wondering can I stick a multimeter onto the coilpack connector to check that there is a current going to it? also can I check the connectors on the ptu to make sure they are sending out a current properly too? if where should I be plugging the little prongs from my multimeter? (not exactly a skilled electrician sorry)

 

also is there any way I can check to see if the coil pack is at fault without buying a new one just to see?

slight update, had a bit o help from a neighbour and there is defo a current going to the coilpack and we pulled the pack and there was a spark there when turning the engine over... so whats left? injector, injector connector, fooked or stuck valve??

 

which is the most likely culprit and any idea how to check them?

OK scratch it all, I am now the pround owner of a working 300zx !!! woooo hoooo!!!

 

amazing what you can achieve with a little fiddling!!! :D

 

On putting the plug and coilpack back in the cylinder started working again!!

 

Massive smoke screen from the exhaust had me worried for a bit but a quick spin and it seemed to clear up a treat!! :dance:

 

seemed to be running rich and also burning a little oil?? make sense to anybody?

I have this exact problem now, was hoping to find a solution here!

 

I have tested the coilpack connector ont he harness and there is definately a positive and negative current there. The third connector seems to trigger the spark and this is what I think is the problem.

 

I tested this on another connector and you get an intermittent green light but when I put the tester on the dodgy connector, nothing, so no signal to trigger the spark.

 

Any ideas guys??????? It was just about to go through the MOT.

Bloody PTU! I have fitted a bling pipe right next to it and I must have dislodged the connector to the PTU.

I have now, had to make some new ones with paper clips! They work really well! Maybe I should start myself up a little cottage industry and apply to become a trader on here!! :D

In most instances when your not getting a good connection in getting a spark to the cylinders very and double check ALL your coil pack connectors. They become faulty after years of heat and subjected use. Easiest way to clean them and keep them in working order is to scrub them with isopropel and a wire brush..then apply dielectric grease to the terminals.

 

Most of you who are going through rebuilds will understand that replacing the entire wiring harness will aid in a better responding motor as well as ensure a proper connection to all electrical sensors.

If and when the time comes for the rebuild (lets be honest, its inevitable), I will undoubtedly replace most the loom. I feel like i can break most of it now with my bare hands! :confused:

Yep...happens to everyone. Heat is the biggest issue when it comes ti the harness.
