took my baby for a blast this afternoon (in the pi$$ing rain!!) and all was well until I booted it -spooled up fine no probs, next time i booted it.. 5 cylinders!

Thought a coilpack connector had popped off as this is happening a lot recently (am having some plates made to keep em in place) so lifted the bonnet and all looked fine, so decided to find out which one it was, I pulled the one nearest the front on the off side and nothing changed so figure its this connection.

Could the connector just have gone? and how do I fix it in time for Jap performance next week??

You sure its electrical? You haven't got the air filter wet have you?

(i presume its an aftermarket filter?) I had the same prob with

mine a while back, it was my fault though, i was a bit 'generous' with

the hosepipe around the front bumper area! :nono: The poor car

sounded like an imprezza :x:

Doh! :slap: Forget my last post, didn't read speedfreaks post right, saw

the water & 5 cylinder bits, assumed it was a 'driving in the rain' problem!

Symptoms sound similar though?......I'll just get my coat!

Hello matey,

I would be suprised if the connector had just gone , could be a few things bud , PTU , injector connectors etc , if you can bring it over one evening this week I will run a few tests for you

ok.. bizarrely the problem sorted itself on the way to work this morning wtf!!

am really confused now.. how can a coilpack that wasnt working last night suddenly decide to start working now????

this happened to any of you ????

if it has.........what is it?? if I had any hair I would just about be starting on the tearing now!!!!

Appologies in advance if this is teaching you to suck eggs....... :nelson:

been doing lots of reading about the ptu mate (mine seems to be fooked) sounds like it could well be that, apparently they can work fine when cold but when they warm up a bit or are shaken around for a while after the engine has been running the connections will go cack, then let it cool down and it all settles back to normal again, its the only thing that makes any sense to me for an intermittent problem.

What are the Problems?

The failure of the PTU is reported increasingly among Australian Z32 owners.

Problems with the PTU are not often reported in US cars, because Nissan USA acknowledged early on that there was a problem with the original (Mitsubishi) PTU and did a recall, replacing them with an uprated (Hitachi) unit. Any subsequent failures, if they have occurred, are not such an issue because the unit is much cheaper in the States. Collecting the experiences of various Australian owners the following points emerge:

Failures can be intermittent - causing loss of ignition to one or more cylinders - or

Failure can be complete and sudden, causing instant stalling - very dangerous in heavy traffic

The component fails at 100,000-130,000 kms.

Nissan did not apply its recall to Australian cars.

The replacement cost is approx. $1100 ex Nissan Aus.

The replacement which Nissan supplies is the Mitsubishi unit, NOT the upgraded, more reliable unit.

The replacement will fail again, often sooner than the original.

Examination of the PTU reveals delamination of welded terminal contacts.

Failure appears to be a combination of the effects of heat and vibration. Vibration (being attached to the engine!) causes a break in one of the connections, and as they warm up they expand, pulling the wires apart. This explains why a car will suffer failure when hot, but will restart again once cooled down, only to fail again 5 minutes later.

After having me boost control fitted by JD:bow: for some reason mine only ran on 5Cyl...:( but after a quick (well not so quick) removal of the hard pipe and the PTU leads and a good clean with the good old sand paper :D all was well again and she is now running great.....JD

took my ptu apart today following the instructions from that site, couldn't see any dodgy connections though so I'm guessing it was probably just the plug that was a bit ropey (although they both seemed pretty clean and tight fitting...)

got a new ptu on the way so I guess I will find out when that one is fitted!

Dude as you well know i've been there and done tghat it sounds like PTU. Ryan had his doubts about my PTU on the Blue one and threw the PTU I gave him ages ago from the Purple one so technically there is still a spare one down with Ryan. Try to get down there this week before the show, I'll shoot down Wiv ya if ya wanna...

  • 3 weeks later...

TBH, if you have a PTU series 1 then its worth while getting a good series 2 and swapping, or at least keeping it as a spare for whenever the inevitable happens!

I sound like a miser! :) lol
