Hi to everyone,

I have recently become the proud owner of a J reg 300zx and I love it to bits but being a newbie, I need a little help and advice.

I suppose my most concerning problem is that my non turbo automatic transmission engine seems to want to scream its arse off up to around 6000 rpm before it decides to change gear, and then when it does, it often decides to change back down again.

This seems abnormal to me, has anyone suffered similar problems or have any idea what may be causing it. It was running lovely until quite recently when I decided to test out the cruise control - was this my downfall?

Also and whilst this is not critical, it is very annoying in that my import seems to enjoy warning me whenever I break the Japanese national speed limit at 105kph ! I have looked for the offending buzzer but cant find it - is there any way to disable it? It is the same noise as the "lights on" warning when the door is open.

I know these may seem trivial to you but this is my first post so please be gentle!

Cheers.

Viking.

Thanks for the tip on the buzzer will check it out but having just read a few more posts on the tranny problem I am starting to get a little worried. Some peeps suggest disconnecting the acl2 - what is that? Will check my oil level and smell first thing in the morning - it just seems strange that one minute it was fine and the next it went haywire, I am not a mechanic but I would have thought the oil level would decrease slowly and therefore the effect would not be so dramatic. Cheers for your advice.

Brilliant little article - should sort that out no problem - thanks.

Viking, the TPS ( throttle position sensor) can make a big difference to the upchange on an auto box if incorrectly set or malfunctioning, do a search for tps setting to sort that out.

Hi buddy. Come and join the knackered-autobox club "The K.A.C." :(

The ALC2 is an aftermarket autobox oil pressure controller made by HKS. A few of us have this installed in our cars and someone suggested that it might be misbehaving and to disconnect it to see if it improves the situation.

You'll know if you've got one by checking the ecu area behind the passenger footwell (the series 2 ALC is a black box which is usually visible from inside the car anyways)

when your Z is revving right up to 6000 before changing up, do you notice a significant loss in accelleration, as if the clutch was half-in in a manual?

Did you ever try disconnecting the ALC2 Bud,if so did it make any difference?

Thanks Jeff, It gives me a little hope that this may not be quite so expensive to resolve.

Interestingly though, and I don't know if it may make any difference to the advice I am getting, but I have a "hold" setting on my car which I am told is like an economy setting for the AT, when I engage this, the car goes straight into D3 and up to D4 smoothly as and when you would expect.

Unfortunately I cant test the changing between d3/d4 outside of the hold on position because the AT refuses to engage d2/d3.

My zed only has 60000 kilometres on the clock, if the solonoids were suspected as most of the other posts point towards, do you think this possible at this mileage or are they susceptible to ageing?

I had a friend of mine put the motor on test at my local dealership and he said that no faults were reported. Would solonoid failure be reported on their little handheld computer?

Cheers. Viking.

HOLD will skip first gear and pull off in second, great for traction in the wet (or if youre low on petrol and want to save your revvs! ;) )

I don't know if I have one of the ALC2 gadgets but I will check, I really dont know much about the car at all - only had the beast 2 weeks. It is probably because it is new to me that I also dont really know about the dip in accelleration, I didnt notice anything significant but when my needle approaches that red zone my foot naturally gets nervous and tends to lift all by itself anyway.

Sorry Mantav8 not yet had the time!!! I'm still struggling to get the autobox diagnostic in - even tho it only takes five minutes! Bloody job
