if so how do I protect the I/C's from impact of stones, twigs, and small animals!!

That is what an airfilter is for!!!!

Huh ?

How is an airfilter going to protect your intercoolers from getting pierced by stones etc ?

LOL!! what, you mean youve not got air filters covering your IC's Stu?!!? :D

LOL Thought me meant removing the mesh on the air flow for some reason.

no expert but i would prefer the mesh than the chances of something coming through and wiping out one of the rads, i would have THOUGHT that the minute you slow or stop the mesh would enable the heat to exit a lot quicker?

maybe the mesh at speed will act as a solid wall, but what driving conditions in this country will ever make that a problem, ie 2 hours doing over a ton, never gonna happen:(

if its good enough for one of these;)

I dunno!, i hear that the M1 south is usually pretty clear at about 11pm on occasional thursdays..

For about an hour anyhow :nelson:

Steve

I'm gonna get some of my Granny's old tights and stretch them over my bumper inlets after removing my mesh. After sniffing them that is... :duffer:

Do ya reckon they will keep any uninvited objects out of my Intercoolers ???

How do you know have you been there too aswell as the rest of my mates !!! I dunno she's nearly as bad as Peggy Mitchell and that Pat Butcher.... :D :D

perhaps we should all ditch our '99 spec front ends (and other aftermarket bumpers) and go back to the stock ones... no grills bit also no holes big enough for a rabbit to fit through!!! :)

It really depends on the mesh you're using. Any mesh will hinder airflow to a certain extent but if you use the fine wire type then it shouldn't cause any problems. Its the shite that halfords sell (drilled sheet) that will almost completely block all airflow at any kind of speed...

that depends on how fast your going when flopsy decides to dance in front of your car , hit a pheasant at just over a 100mph and the thing exploded , had to have the car (saab) engine bay profesionally cleaned as there were bits everywhere and what made it worst was the fact it cooked for the rest of my journey :( and smelt revolting

Yeah - everyone knows you're supposed to hang a pheasant for a couple of months, after killing it, before you cook it ;)

now that takes me back to my youth pheasant poaching and a shed full of hanging pheasants :p :D

I actually hit a pidgeon at about 110 in my rover once, I just kind of dropped out of the sky and smashed into the windscreen!! didnt even chip the screen! just exploded in a huge cloud of feathers and left a oily wing print on the windscreen!! :)

LOL.... heard a bus run over a pidgeon once.... how I laughed at the BANG.. :)

I know it was mean to laugh, but I was a kid, and kids find gory stuff funny. ;)

You sick man you....

should I maximise the airflow by removing the mesh altogether?? if so how do I protect the I/C's from impact of stones, twigs, and small animals!!

You wont maximise airflow by opening the intakes up. You may even make it far worse. The air can only pass through the IC at an optimum rate which is always based on far less intake area than the IC cross section or even free air space. An E type Jag's small oval intake is an example of a well designed intake to a big radiator. Once you go above the optimum intake size the air goes all turbulent once inside and doesnt flow through the fins properly.
