Hello!

Right, I currently drive a 1.3 Polo G40, and at some point next year want a car of atleast equal performance, but that looks a bit nicer, and is rear wheel driven. Always been a fan of Japanese cars, and I've shortlisted it down to a 300ZX. What are some common problems to look out for with them? AND what sort of maintenance is required? My Polo needs a supercharger rebuild every 20,000 miles, so I'm not picking faults, just wanting to know what the upkeep of them is. Basically my point is: I don't know the cars well at all, and don't know what to look out for, for eg. if I were to go look for another G40, I'd be asking them when the charger was last serviced, checking to see it's not loosing boost etc.

On from that, what sort of engine modifications are available for them? (excluding NOS) What's a reasonable BHP, 0-60, 1/4 for an averagely modified one? Just trying to get a feel for them, whether or not they are pretty much tuned out, or have lots of potential, without resorting to NOS.

Stock figures for them come out at 14.40 1/4 mile, and 5.6 0-60 which is about what my Polo is doing currently, and that's almost had it's power output doubled, so it's not really gonna get much better than that. Where as, if these ZX's are easily, and cheaply tuned up as my Polo, they should be making silly amounts of BHP. What's the standard boost for one?

Thanks in advance,

Scott

Hiya. Yeah it's sold. Looks gorgeous though.

Hi, Welcome to the forum.

4WS = Four wheel steering? Isn't that suppsed to assist you? lol. I've always know these cars were backend happy. My mates 200SX was and he used to enter drifting competitions for a 200SX club. He said after driving a decent RWD car, you'd never want to go back to a FWD one.

The 200SX tends to be more tail happy than the 300. Driving RWD is a totally different experience to FWD, and can take a bit of time to get used to the different approach to handling.

What's the 2 seater got, where the 4 seater back seats would be? Just a bigger boot space?

The 2-seater is shorter(and lighter) and boot is a bit bigger.

After doing some reading a '94 '95 Jap manual would be ideal. Are imports more to insure?

Imports are higher, but if you go to the right places the difference is small.

John, you seriously got 370 @ the wheels from just exhaust, intake and chip??

Stock engine is unstressed and prime for tuning. Improved breathing, remap and boost increase gives a healthy increase.

That's it, my heart is now set upon IDEALLY a:

1995, 2 Seater, 200ZX-TT, Manual, Japan spec.

Let's see what's on the market next year.

You might want to consider a hard top too (no T-bars). Lighter, more rigid and better looking. Try finding one though .....

If I were you I would start looking pretty soon! a 95 manual SWB tt is going to be a pretty rare find! but will be well worth the wait though! :)

Good luck in your hunt!

Are there any figures on how many there are in the country?

94/95 Manual SWB TT 300ZX (Non TBar) Jap spec.

There are 366 G40's (DVLA) left and I managed to get one of them alright. Could have just been lucky timing though.

Hi mate

For that spec your are best off importing, people dont tend to sell when they've got one :p

Re my engine mods, yep induction, exhaust, de-cat, and the boost is running at 12.5psi. Also have an ALC which makes gearshifts punchier.

There are a few vids of 1/4 mile runs from inside my car linked in my signature

Will be putting her back up for sale when a few niggles are sorted out ;)

Cheers

Pete

Thanks for all the help guys.

Hi EeekiE

As Bob said, that's MAtty's car. The front bumper is the 1999 spec one (They were made up to 2000 in Japan).

They cost £290+vat from the Z centre or Mike Feeney - I just had this fitted after a little bump...... ;)

Best looking front end for the ZX IMO :hyper:

Richard

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

forgot to say, seen Magazine test with better 1/4 miles times than 14.4 (anything from 13.8 to 14.1) from a stock car.

Nice. Well can't get insurance till I'm 21 anyway. So I'll stick to the rocket powered tin-can for the time being! See you all in a few years
