Advice for new ZX300 buyer

I'm going to look at a 1992 UK ZX300.100,000 miles.Any tips on things I should look out for.Asking price is £5000 will take £4400.

Does anybody know of a comparison chart between UK and Jap TT's.Is a UK model a better bet?

In the Tech Sec there is a buyers guide, that should be a good start.

 

There is little to choose between UK and Jap spec in reality, although Jap imports are harder, but not impossible to insure.

UK is cheaper to insure, because with a Jap car parts will have to be ordered from Japan.

Jap cars are restricted to 112mph UK 155mph

Some jap cars make anoying beeping noise in the car when reversing.

Jap cars are in KPH and not MPH.

Engines as far as I know are exatly the same.

 

thats a good price for a UK spec car.

Uk spec just alot easier to get bits for (cause apparently nissan GB seem to think that the engine is even different biggrin.gif)

 

but insurence wise a uk spec will be a better bet. Jap and Uk cars have very minor differences.

Jap spec are slightly harder to insure but are generally better condition, more likely to have extra toys fitted already especially the crap Nissan wheels (sorry to offend) also in auto the Jap spec has extra controls over the change attitude and line pressure.

My advise is Jap spec but then I`ve had two of em so I am a bit biased..or is that wise? Jeff TT

on a similar topic - i'm (casually*) looking, but also trying to build up as much knowledge as I can...

 

how much would a full respray for a 300 cost. i've toyed with the idea of buying an easier to source car (i.e. red) and getting a respray. I know it's difficult to say because there are so many variables, but a ballpark would be usefull to give me an idea. Plus is it a wise idea to take this route, or should i just be more patient?

 

(*casually because I'd most likely need to buy one trade, because I'm too lazy to sell my car privately, and would need to trade it in which adds to the problem of finding a good one)

Cost a arm and a leg but it well worth it(£4500)

that's a good price for a 92 uk (I think).

 

Check the exhaust, if it has not been changed it may well have holes in it...usually well hidden by a lot of dirty-crusty-stuff smile.gif

 

Ask for all the keys... I have 2 but apparently you may have 3.. Black, Red and Titanium (ofcourse the key is not as important as the engine eh ehhe)

 

give a good look at the electrical bits... 8 years you may have some glitch on the stock stereo-system... LCD loosing info....

 

Somewhere on the technical area of this site you may find how to do SELF TESTS... I do not know how.. but if you know how to do a self test it will be quick and very useful...

 

 

If you have a tester with you you may even check the battery to see if alternator is working properly etc...

 

then again you could pay AA about £90 and have them to check the car for you with warranties I think smile.gif

 

 

Thanks for the replies. The car has been fitted with a scorpion exhaust recently so no problems there and I am assured that it has been well maintained with bills to prove. The only worry I have it that it appears to still have the original turbos fitted and at 100k I may be looking at an expensive repair fairly soon after buying the car. The Buyers guide on this site has very useful info on turbo checks using the boost gauge, which I will certainly use. On the subject of turbos I have tried to find a price for standard replacements (just in case) but so far have only been able to find prices for performance upgrade turbos with huge price tags. I am currently driving a diesel cavalier (I know but it was a work thing) and am sure that even in standard form the TT ZX will blow my socks off. It may be that standard turbos are a similar price to upgrade turbos in which case I can understand people going that way but at 0-60 in 5.5 and 155 mph I can’t imagine needing even more power………………..at least not yet anyway

if the car has been well looked after, with plenty of history, as you suggest, then the turbos could well be fine.

 

i have 136k on my stock turbos, and they still seem fine to me....

 

as long as they generate boost, are not noticeably loud, and do not chuck out smoke whenever they spin.....

 

you can get standard replacement turbos for about 650 or so i think (each), but i'm sure others here have had them done and will post prices

I'm sure that Turbo Techniques (or is it Technics ?) could rebuild the turbos at a reasonable cost, but it's fitting them thats the tricky (& expensive) part.

My turbos went at around 60k but I don't think I've ever helped by not allowing any cooling period after driving. They were changed earlier this year and your looking at around £1800-£2000 for stock turbos to be exchanged (that includes labour)

Thanks for the info, how much time would you recommend as a cooling period after driving? Since the turbos on this car are likely to be on their last legs would I be wise to invest in a turbo timer?

After hard driving I think about3-4 minutes.

The other option if you are gonna need to fit a new alarm, is get a clifford fitted, which I believe can include a turbo timer (if so speak to Bob, number in contacts).

I have arranged to see it on Saturday, an alarm and turbo timer sounds like something defiantly worth looking into, car currently only has a cat 2 immobiliser fitted.

 

here we go, ok a turbo rebuild really is not an expensive buisness, it sho9uld cost you no more than £80 for both blowers, it is of course the labour that is expensive.

 

if you get the kit to rebuild the turbo ill have it put together for you.

Thanks for the offer I'll see what they are like and get back to you that one. I feel alot better about buying the car knowing that, if the turbos do give up or are on the way out, its not going to cost me the price of the car again to put right.

Maybe the kit does only cost £80 for the pair, but the turbo refurb labour and fitting is ONE HELL OF A LOT MORE THAN THAT !
