i know this isn't a z problem but could do with some quick advice from some of the many experts on this site.

my 94 celica has just failed mot on emisions only. garage reckons it may be the cat :cry:

results were

fast idle

co = 4.25% FAIL

hc = 124ppm PASS

lambada = 0.89 FAIL

2nd fast idle

co = 3.52% FAIL

hc = 119ppm pass

lambada = 0.90 FAIL

natural idle

co = 0.34 pass

now i've just fitted a k&n induction kit, could this mess up emissions?i know the co levels are way off. also is there anything i can do to get emissions down enuff eg. fuel additives etc.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

cheers

is there an idiots way to check it without having all the flash self diagnostics like the Z's got

Ah, maybe thats why it failed so badly then ;)

you could probe in to the signal wire of the lambda sensor with a volt meter, should fluctuate between approx 200 - 1000mv

glad u mentioned it. i haven't really got a chance of doing this right have i? :o

Find the connector to the sensor - prolly the same type of 3 wire type as for a zed - red wire black wire white wire. When mine was acting up and the diagnostic pointed to a duff sensor I found it was just green oxide in the connector giving a bad connection. A good clean up / scrape out and it was fine - saved £100+ per sensor.

Shame it isn't a pre August '92 the regulations are a bit more slack.

Thanks for that will give it a look tomorrow.

having a pretty bad couple of days so far.... 1st this; also think the prop on the z is shot (about to fall off judging by the racket) and to finish off had an RTA this morning on a driving test ( i was the examiner) and have spent most of the day waiting to be seen at a&e with whiplash. :( :(

still things could be worse, i think.

:D :D :D

Thanx for cheering me up m8. Suppose slammin down accelerator instead of footbrake in reverse (on an auto) and ramming into parked car behind at about 20mph counts as blame then does it?? :)

imagine if had been in a Z. probably would have smashed through 3 cars!!

Sounds like your propshaft bearing is shot does it really vibrate the whole car from right underneath the drivers seat ???

May be relevent,maybe not,but my wifes 200sx failed on high emisions,got a tip from an expert,take out the air filter,give it a good run before MOT,so i did,it passed :D

yep, just about t make a phone call to get it sorted asap, (got the jap fest on the 10th ;) ). Right after trying to sort celica emissions. about to probe the o2 sensor. least its easy to find, sticks right out in yer face from downpipe as soon as u open the bonnet.wish they were that thoguhtful when they designed the Z

ok just done this and got a reading when warm & running of 850 - 970 mv is this good or bad.(o2 sensor - lambda sensor same thing ??? god i'm thick :( )

have taken off k&n induction kit and put original assembly back. Bugger didn't think of testing sensor with k&n on to see difference - doh!!

car needs a service so i think i'll do an oil change, chuck loads of injecter cleaner in fuel, go for a blast and take it for an emissions test somewhere else b4 going back to mot centre.

wont pulling the pipe at the back of the FPR help?

No thats gonna push it rich as hell

.

sounds like a dead O2 sensor (or lambda probe ;)). the voltage should change which keeps the car in a "closed loop" mode, continually richening & weakening the mixture to maintain a level
