Help, my car is running like a Bag'O'Sh!t when cold!

It's been doing it for a while but it's really p!ssing me off now:( It's murder driving it through traffic because it keeps jumping like a kangaroo!

I've done the following:

Changed the temp sensors, checked the connectors leading to said items.

Replaced plugs although I know it isn't that as when I put my foot down it's fine.

Done an ECU test which doesn't display any faults.

Checked the TPS with a voltmeter & it seems to be fine.

Recenty replaced fuel filter.

I'm pretty sure the fault is a fueling one as the problem seems to go when I put my foot down although sometimes there is a little hesitancy. Once or twice the engine has cut out temporarily when cold if I've booted it to pull out of a junction.

I don't understand why it only does it when it's cold to be honest, it's as if there's not enough fuel getting through or something.

Has anyone had similar problems?

You could check the voltage across the injectors, IIRC you can do this at the ECU, John Dixon did it on mine.

I had an unstable idle generally and hesitancy when the car was cold. I did a check for boost leaks and found one in the IAA valve unit. I replaced it and cleaned the IAA and air regulator up and the problem seems to have disappeared. :duffer:

Are the symptoms similar?

Cleaned the throttle bodies and idle valve?

I've cleaned the throttle bodies but not the idle valve. I'll give that a go.

Come to mention it, on occasion the idle speed has been going up & down between 800 & 1200 rpm almost at a constant frequency. Would this be a symptom of a blocked idle valve?

Thanks guys:)

Cleaned & checked the valves & still it doesn't run right :(

I had the same symptoms in the past and it turned out to be a combination of the PTU and MAF......

i dont think you have a fuel problem as it is fine when you open the throttle

have you popped the bonnet and looked at the throttle assembly with someone inside the car gently and slowly applying small amounts of throttle

as you would in trafic, it could be something as simple as a sticky throttle assembly at small openings , streched throttle cable maybe and the slack is

causing the hunting of the tickover ??

as Dave (Marley) said, I too had this prob and after I got my few (4) boost leaks sorted it went.

Borrow a MAF off someone local to you for a couple of hours and see what the outcome is...or borrow a PTU.

Disconnect and reconnect the battery to reset the ECU. This sorted my similar idle problems (which, I may add, were caused by me caning the car shortly after purchase).
