So what would I have to pay in a worse case scenario with a Zed?

Let's say I risk getting a slightly older/higher mileage Z. eg: 91,70-80,000 miles...

What could typically go wrong and what sort of money are we talking about?

If I put £2000 aside of a couple of years incase of a major "issue" would that be sufficient?

okay

my car has done 120,000 miles, I've owned it since 98,000 miles, in that time I've replaced the Master Brake cylinder, clutch and startermotor, at a cost of around £1000 over 2 and a half years.

A previous owner had the car and at 60,000 miles the lower engine was replaced (all pistons and block) and new turbos were fitted at a cost of around £6,000

You will have to use your eye when looking at these cars, perhaps take another member along with you, and look at the service history and how much of an enthusiast they are, will they ignore problems? or do they get them fixed quickly.

I bought mine in 2002, it took me 6 months to find and cost me £6500,

With these cars noone can offer you a guarentee as to them not blowing up 3000 miles down the road if they have been mistreated.

If the car has loads of service history and has been looked after, that could be enough.

If you buy a nasty one that hasnt had as much tlc, it maybe that could cover half? It all depends. I bought a good one. The engine and gearbox are in excellent condition, and just regular servicing has all that has been needed.

It all comes down to buying the best you can afford at the start. I dont think you should buy a rough one and throw money at it. Bad idea.

If you buy a good one, keep it in as good as condition as you can. That way you can spend the money on modifying it. ;)

You pays yer money yer takes yer chances mate.

Make sure you get a goodun is all I can say. Take someone who knows about Zeds with you and don't settle for the first couple you see. I saw about 15 or so before I bought mine and I payed 5.5k bearing in mind it had no bodykit, alloys etc .. fairly standard.

I would at the very least get a basic AA inspection done on a vehicle if it was a private one with no warranty.

Possibly even an extensive inspection! Think they cost something like £250!

The last think I'd want is to buy one and find some serious issue with the engine or gearbox etc!

Its impossible to say mate. £2k would pay for most bad eventualities though.

That poll is scarey!!!!! Over 20% of people havnig to pay more than a £1000!!!!

Manual car:

Engine blown ~£2000 inc labour

Turbos blown £2000+ inc labour depending on which tubs you go for

Auto:

Engine as above

Turbos as above

Gearbox ~£1200 fixed usually inc labour but add ~£150 for fitting if not

I'd put at least £3k aside if I were you. It would be daft if the engine had blown not to do the turbos at the same time so ~£3k would cover you for blown engine AND tubs inc labour if done at the same time...

Personally I think that on a car like the Z, an inspection from an independant org' would be a waste of time. You are best off having it looked at by a Z fanatic/guru or a garage that work on them a lot.

But overall, service history and maintenance is the key. I had mine for th3 years. Did 35k mile in her and maintained her religiously. She was running a SS zorst, chip/ecu, boosted and she was on oem tubs. She did me very well in that time.

Worst case scenario?

As Andy's post but the engine blowing would cause you to crash into Reggie Kray's grandson's new Enzo, writing it off and killing his wife and firstborn, catapulting the cars into the Russian Embassy during a particularly heating nuclear arms negotiation with the US Senate, causing...

You asked SRRAE about that didn't you pete - ****ing cheat! :D

Fifteen Chris?! Look who's talking ;)

LOL ... :D What can I say, most of the first ones I saw were complete lemons, didn't really get a feel for a goodun until after the first 6 .. LMAO ...

i certainly wouldn't be giving the AA £250 for summat they know jack about

ask how many forum members that have had an AA call out, if they guy that came knew anything about a z

also have you checked what they DON'T check???

brakes

compression

oil leaks

air con

and thats just the main things that jump off the page at you

yes get somone who knows what the shit they are talking about

look at many, you will learn a lot yourself and KNOW when the right one comes along, if your worried about having to spend cash i wouldn't buy one,

leave your cash in the bank to earn interest, but if you want something that

gives you buzz and a smile everytime you drive it then keep looking

Neil get yourself to a meet then you will see what to expect, and you'll get great advice there too.

U can never be sure with zeds but a good idea is to get a car from someone on the forum.

But for example, just cos an engine/car is 12-13 years old and has done 70,000 miles for example means nothing.... If it's been services well, it should should be more than happy to carry on without blowing up...

On refelection I would defo do a compression test on the engine before I bought it and anything else I could before I layed out my hard earned. (eeehhmm Kicks Tyre)

Don't forget to budget £20 for the subscription for this place :D

To be fair, you could buy a really good car and it could STILL blow up 5 miles down the road. Then you'd be even more pissed because you'd have spent more money on a so called 'good one'. Shit happens, as they say, so find the best you can for your money and keep some money aside for possible problems...

Oh and TBH service history means jack shit IMO - it is easily possible to badly service a car and make it worse.... ;)
