Manual Gearbox Question

No, no, don't panic it's not the manual / auto debate yet again.

My gearbox has started to make some noise when in Second, does this mean it's wearing out ?

It still goes into gear smoothly, but there is a constant noise (I can't describe it)

If it is the gearbox, how much can I expect to pay for a recon / new unit ?

Thanks in advance.

Manuals are for Shitbox burglars! LMFAO! biggrin.gif

Woooo watch out Tim, the SX Administrator might ban you. biggrin.gif

Try to explain it, what does it sound like?

Stuart

Sort of rumbling knocking noiseish type thing perchance?

Try pushing the selector forward (i.e. 'harder' into 2nd) - does the noise abate? If it does, then the most likely possibility is the selector rod bushing - easy replacement..

Sounds like the manual is on it's way out.

Could also be the driver.

Either way an Auto will sort it! LOL

you see this is exactly the bullshit that is going to get this site in the same vane as the 200sx forum... i mean grow up guys.. take me as an example biggrin.gif

I have the same problem and check if it happens in 4th gear aswell...

it could be the rubber around the casing that is loose, common problme, then as you put car in 4th or 2nd it ever so slightly opens up and you hear the gearbox....

A damn side easier and cheaper to fix (ie about £5) than those crap auto boxes that go and end up costing a grand to have fixed cause you need some level 10 racing mods cause your wimpy auto 300zx box cant handle a 30 bhp upgrade biggrin.gif

Yes, it does happen in 4th, but it only produces a much quieter noise.

I would describe the noise as a whirring.

It also seems to come from inside, you don't hear it any louder if you open the windows.

It's much noisier in 2nd than it is in fouth, it still goes into the gears ok, and there is no loss in power.

'Yah boo sucks' to Auto's biggrin.gif

yeah that is probabaly the rubber around the gearbox or the little bearing. Iether way its not a major problem.

The sound you are hearing is the actual noise from the gears.

Oh you are funny people you English, but most honourable gentlemen!

Manuals are not as strong as Auto box on Z car, see, this is why you are having tits problem! My advice? Buy Bonsai tree, prune Bonsai and wax on for an hour and then wax off for an hour! biggrin.gif

Book Z car into excellent Silvia Engineering to have clappy manual box removed and excellent and honourable Auto installed instead! wink.gif
