Thatcham Alarms/Trackers and insurance

Just been thinking, when I insured my car I had to tell them I had no alarm cos I'm missing the fitting certificate for my cat1 that is fitted. cost about £80 more for the insurance.. (hyperformance)

Friend who just got a boxster didnt bother renewing the tracker subscription cos the insurance company (adrian flux) said it made bugger all difference to the cost of the policy!!!! Cos with a tracker it's pretty much impossible to get away with the car!

I'm more than a bit surprised that with all the hype around approved alarms and gizmo's like trackers why it doesnt really make much of a dent in policy prices!!!

Anybody else have similar or opposite experiences???

Similar- I was told by Elephant that an alarm would make no difference to the Premium whatsoever, and that an immobiliser would only reduce it by about 5%.

I asked what WOULD make a difference- basically anything cosmetic like bodykit and rims. Seems like the opinion is that if a car is appealing to a thief it'll be nicked whatever; it's the visual appealingness that matters.

Not sure I agree myself!!!
