Anyone know what the fine is for not having road tax?

Problem I got is that the a-hole I bought the zed off didnt send the log book off :xxx: :mac1: , so it aint registered to me yet. Wondered why I didnt get the tax reminder. So goes down to get my tax on the 1st with my hard earned cash and told I cant get it and to fill out a form to obtain the reg doc first. Phoned the DVLA and they tell me it will take 4 to 6 weeks and in the meantime, to take the car off the road! Cant do that really as its me daily drive to work. Dont want to have to buy another car just for the sake of buying tax, so think it will be cheaper to risk the fine rather buy another car.

Anyone know how your insurance stands if you are not taxed?

The law is an ass!

But to sum it up;

'The registered keeper of an unlicensed vehicle could be fined a minimum of £1000.In addition to this, you will either be required to purchase a licence or declare SORN, pay arrears of duty accrued whilst the vehicle was unlicensed and pay a penalty of £80.'

Don't do it mate, they have cars with onboard computers that scan your number plate and it tells the cops to pull you over. They then go over your vehicle and you to find out what offence you've commited. Also, if you don't declare the car off the road you'll get a letter through, everythings on file and there's no getting away with it I'm afraid. My mate got caught with this and all he'd done was leave it parked at work. I got pulled over 1 day after my Tax had run out, it was on the last bank holiday, and I explained I forgot to renew and when I realised I had no Tax the post office was shut so I couldn't get tax. I got a seven day wonder and was reported to the DVLA, but I have heard nothing since. But all in all I wouldn't advise it. Is it worth the fine? If you don't have tax you have no Insurance as well, which is REALLY not a good idea... Gone are the days when you could get away with putting your wiper blade over the tax disc and get free tax for six months eh? ;)

I got fined £300 for driving with no tax :( on me old landrover, but then again it was more than 6 months out of date :o

Had it parked up, my old prelude broke down & I had to pick up me mum at brum airport... caught in warwickshire by traffic police :(

If the car is not registered to you, then the insurance is not valid. Just something to think about.

it says on the letter you get 4 weeks before you recieve a £80 fine

I got fined £25 for my MG (which was tax exempt) because i hadnt filled out a sorn in 2 years :S

not true, the owner/driver is not ness the registered keeper. i think it even says that on the back of the reg docs, or words to that effect.

When you insure the car your asked if your the registered keeper and if you have said yes, SRRAE is correct.

oh balls- I'm not so bothered about the fine, but if me insurance is invalid, I guess it aint worth risking it. Knowing my luck i would plough into a merc and end up having a 10k bill.

So given that- anyone got a mota they can lend/hire cheap for a few weeks?

AL

no tax on your car does NOT make your insurance void, if it did

you would be asked "is your car taxed etc" and when you sorn a car you can carry on with your insurance, ie how many people with cars like a zx only use it in the summer, so they only tax it when they use it, but continue with their insurance (obviously)

sorry to make that clear, generally the registered keeper should insure the car in their name, but tax is not anything to do with insurance

Hang on,

The new laws say "If you do not send the (correct part of) the V5 to DVLA when you sell a car then you are still liable for the tax/SORN declaration and the penalties for non-payment"

Therefore technically the previous owner of your car is still liable for it, not you!

Anyway, you should have the little green part of the V5. Take this to a VRO, there's one in Reading, with an application for a tax disc, application for a new V5 in your name plus MOT insurance and payment and they will tax it on the spot.

How many people buy untaxed cars from dealers, then have to tax it immediately without the V5? Loads, of course! My ZX wasn't taxed when I got it, plus I wanted to assign my personal reg no as well - extra complications - but I did it all at Luton VRO on the day (in 10 minutes :D )with just the little green slip of the V5 as the dealer only had the red part (he sends to DVLA) and the green part (given to me).

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Yes, but you can still insure a car not registered to you. You just need to inform your insurance company of the situation.

Some of our fleet cars at work are on contract hire and registered to the lease co, not us (As they tax the cars - included in our rentals) but we still insure them in our company name.

i think that little green bit is only valid for two months m8

Could be the case now I suppose, but I managed to use it to tax my Renault 5 years back when the previous owner neglected to send off the v5 - and that was 10 months after I bought the car.. :)

from the dvla site

Vehicle Registration Document/Certificate (V5 or V5C) or

New Keepers Supplement (V5/2 or V5C/2) - green section of the V5 or V5/C and complete V62. The V5/2 and V5C/2 can only be used for up to two months after you acquire the vehicle.

further to taxing the car, my missus went to tax her car and came back with the v11, i said i thought the post office should have taken it off her, so rang dvla, and they said no, as its all barcoded now, so a quick swipe and the info is relayed instantly onto computer, another step closer to ALL your info being available to the police etc, only mot to go and that won't be long

only mot to go and that won't be long

Too late - 'new' MOT's are apparently computerised (if the MOT centre has moved to the new equipmetn) and there's a central database..

However, that does mean that you can now buy your road tax online! Which is pretty funky..

So the way I see it now is that as long as I inform my insurance company that I not the registered keeper, I should then be insured. But still risk the £1000 fine. They cant back charge me too much as only just run out. The whole thing stinks and I'm pissed that I have the readies to give to the tax man, but he dont want it. This country is fooookd up.

Looks like I will be hiring a nissan micra @£117 per week until I get the document. Hopefully the missis will drive that and I can nick her Mazda 323.

Still on the good side, I'll probably end up saving a months tax + the fuel on the zed. Probably a good time to take the engine out. If only I had the money

Seriously though- if anyones got a half decent taxed motor and want to charge me less rent than the above- PM me ;)

yes m8 hence i said SOON, its not only bad news for the motorist, but the garage computers will be linked to dvla, so they will enter your reg number/chassis and then the computer will tell them if the mot can go ahead,

then emissions/mileage will be officially logged,

i wouldnt have thought there would be anything to stop the ministry sitting outside an mot station with a laptop monitoring what the garage is doing ie time etc, we only need a chip in the car now to say your allowed to start up and drive off:(

Aye - it's all getting a bit draconian, but hey.. that's government for you :(

I wonder if all licenced MOT stations are being forced to upgrade, or whether it's a gov't supplied bit of kit - if it's just down to the garage to stump up the cash and it's not mandatory (yet) then I'm sure a lot of the smaller MOT stations will stay with the old system - at least until the last possible second..

Time to hunt down your friendly little MOT man (if there are any left ..)

it seems if the trials work then

"A national rollout covering all 18,500 MOT centres is set for some time in late 2004."

as i said i would think it will piss of the garages more than drivers

is it going to make a guy without an mot get one????

the majority who look after their cars probably won't be effected, apart from

an mot will probably take longer and be done properly, cos big bruvver maybe watching

how much do you want to bet the price of an mot goes up though :nono:
