could it be something to do with a crankshaft sensor?

i had a similar problem & clueless garage replaced ignition module. clued-in garage diagnosed sensor fault- no probs since.

i,ll check my old invoices, it was a few years back

jed

in fact it was the 'crank angle sensor'-- cost 285 sq. in 1998-- plus fitting!

still, perfect since.....

the first garage replaced the 'trignition'unit, which made no difference to the problem

jed

'crank angle sensor'-- cost 285 sq

Why is that so much.

I got one for a Sierra for £18.

Didn't know Sierra's had 'em !

Charlie,

When you got a replcament PTU did they give you an identical looking one, or is it the Mk II model ? I don't think anyone should get a Mk I as a replacement, they are known to have problems.

WOW £18 biggrin.gif thats a bargain!!! Does it fit ok biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif?

Hi Charlie,

Since you've already changed the PTU..I'd suggest the following:

1. Get a computer diagnosis - and see what error codes if any you're getting

2. Check your injector connectors - for some reason the connections all go nasty over time...These can become a real problem, especially if you've been wiggling wires under the hood!

Let us all know how you get on smile.gif

That's the old one then. AFAIK they are interchangeable. Anyone getting a replacement should hassle Nelson for the upgraded vesrion. There was a recall for the US market, around 1993 I think. and everyone should have got the new model. Nissan didn't bother for the smaller markets though. :-(

OK - does indeed sound like the PTU...but seeing as you have replaced it - lets move on from that, first - do a diagnostic and note down the error codes. If its anything else and your old PTU wasnt at fault - get your dosh back on the part. If no error codes, then check as many connectors you can find under the hood - they suffer from the green death - clean em up - start with the PTU and then the CAS, then check the MAS (silly abbreviations eh?) work your way through them, clean them up and see how you go.

Bilky, guys i feel emosional, just took my Z back from Hullandward Gararge and realy want to kill some one now,BUT after seeing how helpful you guys are realy makes me feel OK!!! about shit, thanks.

Right Bilky have just been told by garage that i would have to take my own fucking car to nissan (ey what the fucks going on)i have been there best custumer for the last 2 years (no shit thousands spent litteraly four hundred this last two weeks alone).Anyway i have booked it in to nissan for thursday afternoon for a plug in to try to locate problem,my fear is becourse the car may not fuck up at that moment ,nissan may not be able to locate the problem,AM I RIGHT TO THINK THIS WAY?

So by what Bilky said if this does not work i should try cleaning different connectors,BUT! bilky what does CAS,MAS ect mean and what am i looking for?

You guys know how greatful us new owners are and you are saveing my martial arts students a good beating at class tonight(ha ha) Chas

my new one is like the one on the left and i was told that the one on the left was the up-dated one so was i told porkies i hope not as it cost me plenty wedge and i wont be chuffed it it just breaks again in 12 months i'd be interested to know how you think you can fix one andy p as i have my old one there just gathering dust

I'd go with Crank angle sensor, these can have intermittent problems before they finally pack up. Make a scratch to mark the sensors position, remove it and you will see 2 tiny little holes, get an airline or pump and blow some air into them, not hard though, trying to get rid off the green gunge in there that knackers them, these can be repaired but i don't know who buy,(Andyp ?) do not try and take apart yourself, trust me i know this one, refit back in original position and hopefully that MAY be it. Smithy

Tooley,

What was the fault with your old PTU ?

Some can be fixed, some not sure.

Email me if you'd like to to have a go. A repaired one should last as long as an original.

Smithy,

Know nothing about the CAS (other than what's in the manual) and certainly wouldn't want to practice on a working one. If you have a broken one then I can take it apart and maybe guess whats broke.

Mr. P!!! Had mine done at Middlehurst at the later end of last year. Well straight after I got the car actually, mine was defo the one on the left also!!!

Where's Darren when you need him?

I reckon they replace them with an identcal part number .... Would be interested to hear Darrens opinion though ....

The info I got was from the land of Aus.

My answer is they did come up with a better 1 they now use the PTU from the

engine known as the RB20det I can not remember the code for it but the last 2

numbers are either 10 or 01. Shore hope this helps they do cost a pretty

penny but

The replacement PTU is available from Courtesy Parts for $178.45 + postage
