Guest jaz Posted August 29, 2004 Posted August 29, 2004 so what do you guys think? ive been contemplating selling my car for a while now, want something different...but don't get me wrong i absolutely love my car and has no probs what so ever! but ive always wanted a 840ci sport! 4.ltr V8  0-60: 5.9....top 175... so roughly the same spec as the 300. its worth £12000 and mines worth maybe 6000...and its a straight swap?! :duffer: so come on guys hit me :slap: Quote
greg Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 i like the 8-series,i know the z is expensive but i think these cars if not cared for will cost you alot more than a z for parts IIRC as one of my friends has one! like all beemers arent they electronically limited to 155mph spose its easy enouth the remove the limiter  they look best in black IMO greg Quote
Clarkey Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 if you want to ahcnage and its worth double then to me its a no brainer, 8 seires is the best looking beemer ever too imo, not a bad swap. Quote
Guest jaz Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 yeah greg it has been delimited...and ur right bout parts but as clarkey its a nice looking motor and not a bad swap at all! it just depends on me i suppose now, whether or not i can part with me baby :( Quote
MAC 1 Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 Jaz only you can decide,If it was me then 100% NO THANKS. http://www.suntimes.com/auto/bmw/840ci.html Quote
SMW1 Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 I really wouldn't want to see you in a differnt car (apart form your polo of course) but it does sound tempting. But just think of it this way. Is your car worth 6k to you or the market ? Quote
Guest jaz Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 hi mac, that pic doesnt do it justice  but stu your right this guy lives local and i dont think i could ever face someone driving MY 300 around in the local area, with the private plate A ZED X ( A7EDX)...and ALL that work getting it up to its true prime and glory and and and and.....oh guys the list is absolutely endless!!!! countless journeys back n forth to stupid idiotic mechanics that didnt have a clue about the motor, overheating, smoking, bad idle, electric probs, dealing with the PREVIOUS owners cock-ups!!!! problems with the gearbox, got it checked from 4 different guys who told me 4 different problems?!WTF finally got the thing recond for £1800http://WWW.300ZX.CO.UK    with the help of the forum, i found out that my engine had previously been taken out/recond but put back in by some F@£$%@! cowboys. breather system pipes all mixed up, boost pipes put bk all wrong, loads of electric connectors were also mixed up...gbox harness sheered, rev sensor left unconnected, oil leak, f'd sump, cam belt - incorrect timing....etc etc list goes on and on......the baby soon gave way, engine blew... contemplating wether or not i could donate some of my organs to fund repairs! but i finally managed to source a 2nd hand engine and sort out practically everything with the help of one guy in particular (a shame i suppose, you know who...) cos it has not missed a beat since! going on to 1,5 yrs since the transplant!!! still cannot put it into words. theres no way anybody would offer me £12000 for my baby later on...oh i dont know  Quote

TonyC Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 Looks like its the best of the 8s, taken from above site," The 840 Ci Sport is definitely the right one to get. It has the 4.4l V8 which does not have the Nikasil problem of the earlier 4.0l V8 and slightly less complex than the V12. Also has all the M-tech bodywork and mirrors. You get a little less power than the 850 but it really does not matter (the points add up just as quickly!) I got the Rac to inspect mine (bought last Sept, also 97R, but 64k miles). Don't buy it if any of the electrical bits don't work (and there are many of them). It isn't cheap to run with a >£50 tank fill. I have been towed twice for basically the same problem (a blown heater valve, and subsequent blow out of a weakened heater pipe). Loading onto a low-loader can be a problem as the skirts have very low-ground clearance. When the sensors go haywire (once in 6 months - oddly enough the temperature sensor went sour), then even BMW dealers have problems diagnosing them, although any good independent can do the servicing. I bought a Peake Research R5/FCX-II Code/reset tool of my own as some garages do not have 8 series on their diagnostic systems (I am also a gadget freak so this satisfied other urges). Despite a few problems, I do not regret buying the car at all - it is fabulous and made even my dearly beloved 635 I traded in seem like a smelly old boneshaking penny farthing." :) Quote
Guest Jeff TT Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 JAZ,no question as a direct swap it is a top deal, then go and buy another zed as a project car ..sorted. Seriously the 4.4 V8 is a top engine, I have 4 year old 540i V8 to use as the posh do motor and it is superb, 6 speed gearbox Mtech suspension wheels etc before the Beemer I was a bit sceptical but they do rock! fuel economy is reasonable and the power starts from 1500 revs right through to the limit. Guest jaz Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 maybe an option jeff, gettin another zed as a project car! Tone, some top info there fella! took it for a test drive, its amazingly smooth...engine purr's like an extremely happy kitten after being fed 2 bowls of tasty whiskers meatballs! like u said tony the power really begins around 3000rpm so does not feel as rapid as a zed, but its sooo smooth and the accelertation seems never ending! its a 96' P reg...dark navy blue. il try posting some pics soon. thanks jaz Quote
tooley Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 ive been in the unrestricted version of the bmw ure talking about.....its a monster but be wary of electrics and also the brakes on the front they are known to eat them and also cost a lot to replace.....watch for the rims also if they are clean then keep them so they pit very easily....diffrent look to a z but still a classic look about them imho Quote
Guest Goit Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 Always loved the 8 series myself, future classic imo too. I'd deffo do a straight swap and then get me mits on one of the cheap Z's that are floating around at the mo' as a project car! Best looking Beemer by far! I used to have a couple of 635 csi's big beem coupes are sweet. Still no Z tho! but I've never had a crack at the 8.... mmmm V8 :D Quote
RichardS Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 so what do you guys think? ive been contemplating selling my car for a while now, want something different...but don't get me wrong i absolutely love my car and has no probs what so ever! but ive always wanted a 840ci sport! 4.ltr V8  0-60: 5.9....top 175... so roughly the same spec as the 300. its worth £12000 and mines worth maybe 6000...and its a straight swap?! :duffer: so come on guys hit me :slap: Sounds like a good deal, mate  I've always liked the 8 series, Stylish and smooth, but are you sure about those performance figs? 840 is fekking heavy, even by Z standards and takes around 17-18 to hit 100 from still so way slower than a ZX. The 850 would struggle to hit 60 in 5.9 unless it's the CSi (5.6 litre). 4.4 V8 is a cracking engine though - don't they use it in the new Morgan too? Richard :) Quote I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:
Craig David Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 I've always wanted an 8 series BMW. Is it a 1997 car? If it's older it's probably not worth £12K (private sale) and not a 'sport' model either. I always thought they looked gorgeous, especially on big wheels. Quote
Steve-o Posted September 11, 2004 Posted September 11, 2004 Just seen this post, lovely cars, always wanted one before I got the Z and they look best I think in the bordeux red colour. Very tasty cars mate, if you dont want it put him in touch with me!!! lol. Quote
