Smelly Air con / improve performance, tips

Following our particularly damp but humid summer there seems to be a non too pleasant smell inside particular if the air con / heater is used.

Now as detailed by others here before the often pongy smell in your zed is due to bacteria growth on the evaporator. Aerosols of antibacterial foam for air con are available mostly come with a long nozzle, ( most air con companies sell them) expect to pay between £15 to £30 dependent where you get it from.

Now often the evaporator is not accessible unless great chunks of the dashboard are removed, and so is difficult and or expensive to sort out.

However although complete access is difficult, if the glove box is removed ( 2 x 10 mm nuts + 1 screw holding the damper rod ) you will see a material “curtain” covering up the evaporator housing, in the center of this is a large sensor assembly which can be removed easily, ( screws) remove the sensor plate and you now have very good access, most cases I have done this job there has been a collection of leaves and debris that is actually restricting flow and performance of the air-conditioning system.

Spend some time vacuuming this out and you will see the benefits later, now take you anti fungal spray and give it a good coating, use about half of the can then go to each vent outlet and spray a dose in each one, with what is left in the can go back to the evaporator and finish the can.

Leave for around 15 mins. with the doors open and then reassemble the car and run the air con for about 20 minutes with the doors closed but the windows open about one inch or so.

After this you will be left with a more fragrant car ( and healthier ) with an air con system that will also perform better.
