help!!!!deting

need help just on my way to newcastle today and got a nasty noise from the enigine what sounds like it detonation? its now running rich with sooty black smoke

i stoped the car and got rac to take me home straight away

the noise is all the time even on tick over but its worse when hot as when the car is cold its not that loud

the revs have gone up to 1.5

this happend when i was in a traffic que on the a1 today not a noise until this time as i pulled away from the que

there is no air leaks? well the rac man could not find any

what could this be?

if detting how do i fix?

if my car has detonation will it make a noise all the time when you put you foot down ??? or is it somthing else whats making the noise??? :cry:

Maxsunny, from your brief description it does NOT sound like detonation as this will not occur at tick over, your raised tick over speed could be a factor or simply a red herring, maybe a noisy hydrolic lifter? more info is required to make a correct diagnostic, maybe someone here who lives close to you could help you out with describing the noise better.

the noise only starts when the engine gets warm as when i got the car of the low loader there was no noise and drove it into my drive and you would not know there was a proplem but after about 5 mins on tickover when you rev the engine the noise comes back

but the noise gets louder when you drive it.

also there may be a oil leake as there is some smoke when it gets hot from back of the engine ?#

this may be down to my rocker gasget ?as i think its leaking BUT its got worse since the noise started

 

are the to linked oil leake and tapping noise. :cry:

 

will a consalt find out if Knock sensor has gone ???

it does sound more like a mechanical problem, as jeff suggested poss noisy tappets.

 

consult will tell you if the det sensor is faulty, you can also do a diag test just by bridging 2 pins on the diagnostic socket.

 

HOWEVER a faulty det sensor will not cause det anyway if thats what youy thinking, it will just not detect it & put the car into safety boost permenantly! ;)

Ever heard a car ''pinking''?[showing my age!]it's like a tinny rattle,mine did this in the hot weather and running crap fuel,stuck some optimax in and sorted!-usually get this under load,high gear/uphill etc-but got to agree with jeff and paulc,don't sound like you have this problem.

try this, under the passenger floor mat, peel back the carpet, theres a wooden floor board, a phillips screwdriver will take care of that, then, unbolt the bracket that holds ur ecu in which is behind it...turn ur key one tick before it starts (radio plays, lights r on, etc), on the side of the ecu is a little knob with a slit in it, this is where im a lil foggy, if its not going any more clockwise, then turn it all the counter clockwise, leave it for 4 seconds, then turn it all the way back, then the lil red lite, will flash first long flashes then short, 5 long flashes, 5 short ones, thats code 55, no malfunction, and the ecu isnt picking up anything wrong, if it does 3 long, 4 short, thas code 34, forget wat it is, but thas supposed to b awful, and then do the exact same thing, turn it all the way one way, leave it, turn it all the way back, and ur back to normal

i think the best thing is to get a garage to come round and check it it sounds like it might not be the knock sensor then?

if its the lifter as jef says how much work is this and what sort of cost will this be to fix?

going bac to sandman's bit on the ecu test.it's easy. go to http://www.zedworld.co.uk. find the service&hints page n u'll find how to do the test on there. also the codes as to whats wrong if anything. alot cheaper than getting a garage out. n from pass experience they dont no what to do either unless they've had a few in before

iam of work all week so can have a good play with it need to get it ready for trax at the week end as iam on show there :(
