Iam quite new here and hope to be posting here from know on, i have just steped onto age 17, went and passed my licence aswell... i was shocked when my family told me to choose a nice car for myself and they would pay...

I want to go for a 300zx, but what i was wondering was the insurance cost... how much would the insurance be for a 17 year old, remember that this is my first car...

Iam from london by the way... any ideas would be great... :)

Trust me mate, im in your situation, passed my test in April and having a Zed is just plain wrong. For a 1st car you WILL crash it unless you drive like a grandma!

Also IF an insurance company will touch you for a Zed (Or an MR2 or a 200 etc) you will be looking at 5k easily.

I was phoning round and for a Skyline at 17 for a 1st car it was 22K!!! f+t.

Have to agree, at 17 owning a Z is a dangerous thing!

BUT, there is an exception to every rule! If the cash isnt a problem and u can resist the influence of the nutters give it a go! My advice for what it's worth would be always drive it on your own and never with ya mates on board as you will showoff and lose the backend at best! You'd have to have plenty of self control not to race other cars too, and only boot it on a straight road and dont exceed the national speed limit by more than 20mph, and dont drive it in the rain at all!!

So if you think you're the exception to the rule go for it, and be damned sure not to prove all these old duffers right!

Cheers,

I'd have loved a car like the ZX for my first one....

.....but sensibly decided not to (plus the Z32 wasn't around in 1987  ).

I did have a RWD, though and moved up to a much faster car (Manta 2.0 GTE - hell they were good back in '88-89  ) around a year later.

Insurance wans't a killer then either. I'm glad I didn't get the Manta straight away, I'd have wrapped it round a tree, sure enough.

I agree with the earlier post about a classic car, though - makes you stand out for sure and you won't be tempted to see what 300BHP can really do, killing yourself in the process.

Good luck with your choice

Richard :)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I was seriously tempted to go for a little MG midget (i think im right in sayin their RWD). But it was only a 2 seater and i fancied somehing more modern and probably more reliable.

Dont get me wrong id love to have a Zed at 17 but i know for damm sure i would crash it.

My family are a bunch of petrol heads and in my opinion they are good drivers and would know what to do id they lost the backend or something similar, i would like to say i am also a good driver but at 17 i have got ALOT more to learn and experiance before i can ever say that, even though i am a much better driver than most if not all of my friends.

Start with something smaller, give it a year, maybe 2 and then get a Zed, by then the insurance will be alot less (if you have no claims) and you will be alot more experianced, also how many 18 or 19 year olds do you know with cars such as a Zed?

Just my 2pennies worth.

Thanks again for all the replys and advices...

Sorry i took long to reply as our my family took long to think about the case, ok i spoke to them and asked what there idea of an sensible car would be for me...

Dad replyed, MR2 would be a nice car for your ago, maybe a few mods you pay from your own pocket would make it nice for you...:o

mum replyed, Vax Calibra, is nice cars plus they have great bodykits that can be fitted...

My sister's idea was an vax corsa but my dad rusfused for some reason and said he did't want me to look like a sissy.

The insurance would be no probs for the first year as my family is going to b paying, upto £1500

Would a MR2 Go pass £1500 on insurance? oh my mate suggested this...

FTO Click Here But i dont think this would cover too!!!

let me know which kinda car is best and low for insurance but it must look somthing cool, not a bangger :) LOL somthing that looks and like zx but that will be sutable for me...

anything 2 litres or above ur gonna find impossible to insure for less than £1500 at 17

id be surprised if u cud even insure anythin above 1.6 litres for less than £1500 to be honest bud

good luck

yaseen

I take it as an MR2 would cover me on insurance... is that right!!!

I take it as an MR2 would cover me on insurance... is that right!!!

well MR2 are 2Litre, so ud be very very very lucky to insure one for th amount ur parents are willing to spend

All I can say is you will probably end up crashing your first car whatever it is but anything much over 100bhp at your age and experience is just silly.

Most of my mates (and me!) wrote off cars when they were young and it's not always totally your fault. You just don't have enough road sense yet to keep out of trouble and avoid other stupid drivers.

You'll be down the pubs/clubs with your mates and it will get damaged or nicked too! We've all had it done.

How many people sign up on this board then crash their Z within days? LOTS and most aren't even young drivers!

One guy crashed his 3 times within as many weeks and ended up selling it for scrap :(

The back end is very easy to lose in a powerful rear wheel drive car and you almost certainly won't have driven RWD yet.

Sporty cars are also very expensive to run - fuel and repairs will cripple you.

If you bought a Z or similar I bet you'd be selling it within months.

I'm earning plenty of cash and have very cheap insurance but there's no way I could afford to run this car as my daily driver - £600 in petrol one month ;)

Are your parents paying that too? LOL

Also it's no fun with a bird in a Z - no room and the centre console is as good as a chastity belt LOL

You can stand up with the T tops off or get on the bonnet but that's about it

Not fun in winter ;)

Get an old Escort van - much more fun :D

Right i expect you could get mr2 insurance for under £1500, just, but you'll have to do lots of searching.. Just go on all the insurace sites u can and get quotes, it varies ALOT.

When i was 18-19 i had a rover 620ti, (2ltr turbo), cost about £1300 insurance i think. Got the Z at 19 and i think it was about the same.

Really have to agree that you dont want to much power as first car tho.. I am a fairly sensible driver and havent had any accidents...But when i passed my test i had a 1.4 306, almost crashed it turning out of my drive. U need time to get used to driving properly and well on your own.

IF you find a quote for less than 2K on the Mr2 please let me know as you will be 1 VERY LUCKY bunny!

I was looking at quotes for a 1.3 1998 Micra and was getting quotes of 2K fully comp.

Dan.

Searched most of insurance companys for qoute on MR2, I serached from google... none of them even covers MR2 for 17's... :o That means i need to go for somthing even smaller...

Oh these blimming insurance companys nower days really make young people like us suffer... :smw: LOL

Iam just going to be checking for calibra now, i will let you guys know whats going on...

LMAO   2K MICRA FFS LOL

Doubt if you'll get cover for a Calibra either mate.

Considered a Nissan 100nx? Not bad cars tbh, a mate

has one in black, looks ok with 17's. Oh, they have t-tops too!

No way, I had an Astra GTE and Renault 19 16v at that age, both 150ish BHP and I never had any pro.... hang on.... oh no I fooking crashed em both! :x:

Still I managed to keep the silvia for 9 months before destroying that!

Get an old range rover and black out the windows, everybody at college will think you are a pimp or a drug dealer or both which cant be bad (not at college anyway!)

Right, even a calibra wont cover me as iam 17, this is not fair... A vax corsa with simple mods like full bodykit, alloys, white lether seats costs me on insurance £2000...

what the ... is £2000 all about, i might as well not drive at all...

(No i wanna drive) :nelson: but hey hmmm thanks sideshowbob never thought of nissan 100nx...

BUT LOOK AT THIS

and look at this babe...

No older than the 300ZX.. Quite fun to drive too considering what they are under the skin (I should know, I scared the daylights out of a Nissan salesman in one once :D I knew the roads, he didn't ;)), reliable bulletproof technology too.

I gotta say, at 17, I'd forget about insuring anything that's modified m8.. Hell, when I was 17 (a few years ago now) it was nigh on impossible to insure anything half decent - at 19 I was paying £1500 TPF&T on a Renault 19 16v (great car :)) - you can probably add £500-£1000 to that price now for that age group..

Still waiting for my insurance to come down to a reasonable level - 26 now, and it's still nearly a grand to insure a mildly modified Mk3 MR2 with 6 years NCB!

Honestly iam not thinking as big time project mods onto my first car, just simple plain stuff like 17'' alloys, full bodykit and leather seats, nice exhaust system... and maybe but maybe a standard dump valve... but i wont tell the insurance company about the dump valve :x: if i get caught i'll say i just fitted it on and i was going to let them know...

Would they charge extra on insurance for a neo under car led kit? :o

They charge for everything and don't forget the style police ;) LOL

Anything un-declared can leave you without insurance and then the motoring offences will add to your problems - driving without insurance for a start.

Imagine having to pay for a £30K car you crashed into because you had undeclared mods! Damages for injuring someone doesn't even bear thinking about :o

I think someones mentioned this but have you looked at the Mk1 MR2? Really nice chuckable cars and not slow, and the bonus is they are a 1.6.

Theres a driving instructor round my way who does performance car lessons, has a track which he teaches you how to handle the power etc. I was going to phone him when I got my zed but never got round to it.

I'm 24 and the zed insurance is over £2k....

Honestly iam not thinking as big time project mods onto my first car, just simple plain stuff like 17'' alloys, full bodykit and leather seats, nice exhaust system...

Then forget about getting insured :) Those *are* big mods as far as insurers are concerned..

On my 19 16v, it cost me:

£50 extra for a K&N filter

£50 extra for 17" alloys

£80 extra for a stainless exhaust

You can probably double those figures by now.. A bodykit will probably add £400 or more to the insurance (and most places will just tell you to go elsewhere), leather interior probably another £200 or so at least..

That's pretty much your insurance budget gone already, and we haven't included the initial cost of insuring the car

Pete's suggestion of a Mk1 MR2 is a good one too - fairly cheap to run (apart from the rust :))..

I reckon if I were you though, I'd be thinking along the lines of a nice old british car - someone suggested an MGB.. Maybe see what the insurance would be like on a nice Beetle? (maybe not the one for sale on here, that might be a bit too extreme :)) They have their charms.. (And I'd still love a nice cabrio conversion with a Type II turbocharged engine.. ;))

JMHO..

PC Boss

As I said before, check out the classic car scene!!

Chris Davies

As i said PC Boss, no way will you get insurance on anything like a Zed, MR2, 200sx, v6 calibra etc etc.

Like someone sed the 100nx`s go pretty well. Try and get a later model as the early ones are on carbs and are slower than the injection ones. Once lowered they handle pretty well and are really reliable. 1.6 aint too bad, iv got 1 but due to company policy i get to drive alot of cars, fastest being a Jag XK8 and that thing flies. I WOULD crash it if i were to use it everyday.

And you`l still pay around 2k insurance cos insurance companys are TWATS!!!!!

I have decided finally, iam going for vax cosra (new style) second hand... i will not fit anything for now... i will just fit nice alloys and nothing else...

thanks everyone...
