When I put my foot down (obviously not very often and then only when absolutely safe to do so) there is sometimes a clonk or two that seems to come from the rear of the gearbos or maybe the diff area. It's not a major issue. It is only when I accelerate hard.

 

Any ideas as to the cause. IT's a 91 J Spec auto NA.

 

Are there any rubber bushes down that end of the car?

You have a diff centre bearing aswell as rear subframe bushes (various), sounds more like suspension or subframe bushes as opposed to diff bearing as this would cause constant vibration.

Have you had a gearbox swop or work on it?? Check the exhaust mount for the centre section is fitted. It attaches on a little bracket to the back of the gearbox. Mine was missing and made a clunk everytime I accelerated hard. Couple of quid for a bracket from AndyZ and all is quiet again.

If the prop centre bearing rubber is split the prop can waggle with high low speed torque and rpm enough to knock the sides of the prop bearing mount. Reckon thats worth a looksee on a ramp with a torch from the diff end towards the front of the car. If it is you are looking at £140sih parts and 2 to 3 hours labour to fit - unless you can do it yourself.

if the prop centre bearing had gone though you would experience vibration all the time pretty much just not the occasional knock but no harm in having a look though

Thanks for the help guys. I'll get it on the ramp next weekend. Is the prop shaft bearing change a monster job or can it be done bt a f**kwit like me?

Its not a monster job if you have a ramp and all the tools but you also need a impact wrench to apply 150+lbsft to take off the nut holding the split propshaft together.

 

I went the local garage route and 3 hours of their labour. I think part of that was dropping my custom exhausts tho.

i sometimes get a clonk when just touching the accelarator but on full throttle i dont,i was wondering if this is torsion bar related as i seen some threads of a clonking noise when in reverse! which i get sometimes also.
