Turbos, back pressure and smoke

Hey guys,

I hope I have the right forum and the right people... I remember reading this somewhere and I *think* it was here smile.gif

Anyway, it's in regards to Z's blowing smoke after gutting cats and the like... something to do with turbo seals and back pressure. I remember that there was some discussion on the cause, and better still, some discussion on the cure! Quite a few guys at aus300zx.com (yours truly included) have had this problem.

So how does one solve it? Also, is this an indication of turbos being on their last legs, or does the fix pretty much bring things to as they should be and nothing to worry bout?

Big thanks,

Ben (down under)

Here you go Mr Blipman (no worries mate wink.gif) lol

This product has really recieved alot of praise regarding turbo seals and smoke..

Ok guys here's how the kit works, ON BOOST the one way valves are closed, Mio filters allow crankcase fumes to escape into the air induction to prevent build up, as per standard breather system.

OFF BOOST, which is where the problems are, Internal valves inside the Mio filters are now closed preventing air from being drawn into turbo charger inlet pipes. One way valves now open, drawing a vacuum from the inlet manifold, into the engine crankcase via the rocker cover connections. This metered crankcase depression prevents oil from escaping past the turbo end seals, causing exhaust oil smoke, there you go !!!

My conclusion is, the existing standard exhaust set up with cats, keeps back pressure nice and high, when this pressure reduces it causes the piston to wriggle free from the seal, until eventually there is a gap all the way around piston and seal does not mate up. If you're just removing cats it shouldn't be a problem, if your doing the exhaust as well, I would fit the kit, just in case lack of pressure does now wear out the seals. If you're smoking now already try the kit, it can only help matters as it did with mine. The kit can be fitted by anyone who's got screwdrivers and a few pairs of different pliers ...

If your turbos are getting on a bit, starting to smoke or you're removing cats then this seems like reasonable insurance against potentially quick and expensive turbo demise. Several people already have this fitted and report good results.

Warren,

Your typing, grammar and spelling are improving !! wink.gif

Thank you Oh great one for the great advice.

Where can you get this thing you speak of?

Stu,

Join the group buy under my name. £105 all in.

Ben,

Would love to offer it to you too, but the international postage may make it a bit expensive for you. Let me know if you are interested.

Thanks guys, will pass this info on to the Aussies with this problem.

Andy, as much as I'd like to be part of the gb I think it would be far cheaper to hunt one up here with shipping, import taxes and dodgy exchange rate to consider.

In terms of hunting one down here are we pretty much talking a breather tank or are the valves the extra magic bit that most oil/air separators lack?

Ben

Blipman, it's the valves and where they are placed, give me aweek or so and i'll find out excactly what they are, so you can source them over there, can then send you the set up of hoses needed, which are very easy to get, Smithy

Awesome. Thanks Smithy, very much appreciate it!

Now maybe I can cure my smoke problem:
