I bought my 1990 jap import tt back in feb this year http: http: IMMAG00335a took it to someone i was recomended by spent £600, problem not cured and no way i would take it back to them .When i first bought the car it was running fine then srarted to develop intermitent idling problems and sometimes it would misfire badly so took it to nissan had a cambelt change and full service which cost £500 they said misfire could be due to the following ; coil block connecters damaged, cam shaft position sensor block connecter damaged ,loom holder damaged ,temp sensor or wiring faulty 02 sensor faulty .when asked how much to find the problem they said it could run into thousands .So i took it to someone i was recomended by they said the 02 sensor was causing the problem so had them replaced still the problem remained took it back to them and god knows what they have done with it ,idle is fine but my auto box now seems to have a mind of its own and after i have driven it afew miles ,stopped and then restarted , the engine the revs are all over the place and as the engine revs up ,black smoke comes out of the exhaust i am sure its running too rich HELP ANYONE PLEASE :(

firstly have you done an ecu diagnosis?

secondly if you had a faulty 02 sensor surely nissan would have run a consult on the car! to determine if there are any problems

you can do an 02 sensor test yourself if the car is running to rich! then the ecu should pick up on this as the o2 sensors should be running between lean and rich constantly unless the sender is faulty i think

have you cleaned up the temp connector, tps connector and injector connections 20min job with some wd-40 thus costing more labour charges from nissan otherwise  tps might need ajusting to 0.44v easy job

these cars can run poo over a simple little connector being dirty or worse damaged start with the simple ones first to eliminate problems otherwise pay nissan £££ to fix it  ;)

use the links on this website very helpful  for finding faults and how to fix !or do a search on the forum for the same problems you have

good luck greg ps.. dont be a pussy get ya hands dirty ;) :D

took it to nissan

(that's the first problem  )

also try the PTU connection. its a smallish silver box at the front of the engine bay, tilted at a 45 degree angle. there'll be a connection coming off to the right of it. i recently had a bad misfiring problem and it turned out this connection was loose.

sorry didnt read if yours is a TT or not - if so are you running in safety boost (ie. boost gauge only goes about half way)?

PS.

when asked how much to find the problem they said it could run into thousands .

read this as "i only know about micras"

Most nissan garages are shite, the mechanics there have probably worked on 1 Z in the past x amount of years. Second they are rip off merchants, they charge by the hour and thats ok working on a micra, but when it comes to the Z they are laughing. Especially seing as half the twats dont have a clue and it will all take longer.

As greg says the O2 sensors should flux between about .3 and .7 held at 2k rpm on the conzult.

I would personaly check all the connectors as mentioned above like the PTU, CAS, TPS, and check all the coil pack connectors on top. Remove em, clean em and replace, like wise with these other sensors.

You sure its fuel? leave the car ticking over for a while and use your hand to smell the banks, see if ones smells richer than the other.

The whole gear box changing issue sounds odd, sounds naff advice but may be worth leaving the bat off overnight to reset everything.

Missing could well be coilpacks I would say, also is it more noticeable when the car is cold, or when its been wet?

Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) - little black bow on the pass side of the plenum - faults will cause strange revving and gearchanging in an auto.

It needs setting up to work properly, this could be the problem, if you are handy with a multimeter this is a doddle. Also could be a corroded connector on it. A new unit is only £40 from Nissan anyway.
