I knew my lights were bad, not just the standard Z bad but really, really dire but you know how you put off doing anything about it as there's always other stuff to do? However driving home down the A5 in the dark from the Thursday Leicester meet convinced me to get my ass into gear...the fact it felt like I was driving with my eyes closed and couldn't even see the road several times might've helped!

So, last night I ordered a HID kit from http://www.superhids.com (who were very helpful). I went for the 5,300K Kit and included the Heavy Duty PnP wiring Harness. But the best bit is the price...Kit+Harness=$335 which equates to £181.81. Factor in the 27% to cover Import Duty, taxes etc and add the carriage charge their end ($25/£13.57) and you get a VERY reasonable total of £244.47. And this kit will plug straight in, no need for any modification and when you consider the same kind of kit over here can sell for £500+... :D

Can't wait for it to arrive so I can finally drive at night and actually see where the hell I'm going! :hyper: I'll keep you posted on the installation and results when it does...

Leigh.

Have you installed these yet - and do they improve things ? If so what was the bulb size you got ?

They're in!! And what a f*ckin nightmare job it turned out to be...though NOT because of the lights! Rolled up at JD's house yesterday evening at 7:30 and had a proper look at the kit. First impression (which turned out to be right) was that it was a quality bit of kit, very well put together. Apart from having to cut away a plastic surround from a connector (difference between American and UK sizings?) had the drivers side light fitted and working in just over 10 minutes! Couldn't believe how easy it was. That's when it went a bit t1ts up.

Couldn't get the bulb out of the other for love nor money (turns out some great steaming idjit had put it in upside down and it had wedged firmly...slap my bad self :slap: :o). Realised the headlight unit was going to have to come out...fine...till we saw the position of the final screw...virtually impossible to get at. Even after taking out everything it was possible to take out without removing the bumper it was still an absolute b1tch. All I can say is a HUGE thank you to John for sticking with it and not reaching for the sledgehammer!

When it finally came out (around 10pm!), decided to give the lights a good clean inside. The bulb had turned almost milky and the cover was equally dirty inside. So after cleaning, re-assembling light unit, refitting and replacing all the bits taken out and temporarily siting the gubbins for the HIDS in the bay (ideal place would be down by the recircs as there is zero space available, but obviously didn't have the time to take the bumper off that night, so going to be re-sited later) everything was finally done. Turned them on and the results were amazing. The HIDS themselves are a 1000 times better than the stock set-up, but then we already knew they were going to be better. What did come as a suprise was the difference between the unit that got cleaned and the one that didn't. The difference between the two was stunning, the cleaned unit was so much clearer and brighter. Goes to show that the dreaded stock units can be improved by simply cleaning them.

Quickly took a few photos to show the results. (took the first one with flash to emphasise the difference between the cleaned light on the right of the pic and uncleaned)

All I've got to do now is get the lights aligned properly and I'm laughing! I can't stress enough how fantastic this kit is, good quality and without idjits like me creating problems it would've taken about half an hour to get working! The kit+heavy duty wiring loom (they say on the site it's not essential but believe me it's a good buy!), $25 shipping and no duty as they marked it down as a gift, I paid just under £200 all in. Stupidly cheap for what you get. I HIGHLY recommend this! And once again, massive thanks to JD, cheers for all your work mate, and cheers for not killing me with extreme prejudice when it all went Pete Tong! ;) Thanks bud :D

Oh, and one more thing. They welcome group buys! So what are you waiting for!? ;) :D

Top results

Pleased you mentioned the upside down bulb thing. Sure I would have had to bring it up if you didn't  :p

They look really good !! What kit / bulb size did you get ? I have a Jap import Z - is yours UK spec ?

I think that cleaning them would have done a lot too but the HID do help.

I have taken my headlights apart and they lenses where covered in grease. A quick wipe and you can now see the bulb behind the lens.

Nice one bud, a VERY good mod. I'm gonna get my units apart first, clean them and then go from there.

They do more than just help mate! ;) The gains made by cleaning out the lights are substantial, but even cleaned stock lights would pale in comparison to HID's (but then again my stock lights were particularly sh1tty!:D)

Jeremy: Mine's a J-spec. I went for the 5300K kit (H3 bulbs) with heavy duty harness. No blue tinge but then I prefer being able to see ;)

Leigh.

Agree with the cleaning of the lenses, as dirt gets into the beam grooves and onto the magnifying globe. Took mine apart back in February, and gave them a real good see'in to, with baby wipes (yes I am still talking about the headlights ;))

This looks like a really good kit....................... I want one now :D

When you say you cleaned the lights did you take the main Glass lense off or just poke in from the bulb holes. If you did take the lense off was it easy.

I've got the HID on mine but would really like to cleam the lights up.

Have a look here (scroll down to post 7) , but on the whole, it is an easy job.

Job will be sorted.

I've had lamps out before to do HID convertion Thank God for straight and offset Rachet spanners.

They look amazing, Leigh

Nice to see in the dark is it..... ;)

Actually my headlights are pretty good, but I may go for this kit too - you'll never have to use full beam by the look of if

Richard :)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

  • 2 weeks later...

Wow that was fast, ordered on the 28th of August arrived this morning!! Has been shipped direct from Hong Kong!?!??! Even though the company is in the US.

Doesnt look like I will be paying VAT on it too! :) THey shipped it with no invoice (Which is odd as I thought this was a requirement??!?!?!) and marked it as a gift valued at $25 !!!

Absolute genius!
