Ultrasonic and DPI of Engine Internals and Block

Guys,

As I'm qualified to ASNT level 2 in Dye-Penetrant testing, Ultrasonics and Eddy Current testing I thought I'd offer my services to the Forum, if you have any bits that you want checking for cracks/pores (DPI) and internal flaws/discontinuites (Ultrasonic) or consistancy (Eddy current, shows up changes in metal properties)....

It has the potential to spot problems before they happen, and from causing any real damage if caught in time.

I have all the equipment and disposables at home.

I'm not doing this as a trader, i.e. I'm not looking for money out of it, only the coverage of postage unless I travel to people but I'll do it for favours.....LOL (not that kind either Baggins.....;) )

I can test almost anything within reason as long as it supports the test methods, i.e. I can't test wood!! LOL......

Just thought I'd offer.

Matty.

bloody hell Matty you really are an interesting sorta guy do you get out much

No..........

:D

No..........

actually on a serious note i suppose Cryo work is out of the question

Cryo??

Cryo??

Is it supposed to increase the stiffness or the yield strength, ultimate strength, fatique life, etc ?

its done a lot on rotors etc to stop them warping

No mate, not touched on that........or maybe I don't know it as Cryo......

I've been working on artificial ageing of metals to increase, elasticity, temper, heat resistance, longevity, etc......but that's just though heat treatments, cooling methods and soaking times.....

your right I do need to get out......LMAO!

I can test rotors no problem.

ok can you do ultrasonic type stuff to find weak points in the block etc, as the blocks were mass produced they all vary and some are stonger (better built) than others.

now this is interesting

Yep, very true mate...........

Nice to know where the weak 'points' may be, they could then be dressed (maybe!) or I would be able to find area's that have become weaker over time, not just cracked/flawed but metal properties changed by heat etc.......

that would be really handy to be able to test the block before starting a serious rebuild if I remember correctly this was done in the US and out of 5 blocks tested they only found one good one that was worth reborring etc

Saves taking it apart IMHO........if it's tested prior to pulling it apart that would save lots of time, money, I can check for internal flaws such as holes down to 0.5mm, porosity, cracks (whatever the orientation)......

The more I think about it, the more I can test......suspension arms, prop shaft, anything that holds an Ultrasonic signal........plus everything can be tested for consistancy with eddy current....

I think it's well worth having the running gear checked too.......

Cryogenic..... It is a form of heat treatment.

Most heat treatments involve raising the temp of workpiece to 800-1000c to harden it, then quench to room temp, then re-heat it to a much lower temperature 200-400c to temper it and increase toughness.

Cryogenics involve liquid nitrogen :hyper: and reducing the temperature of workpiece right down. They say is gives a better result (on some applications) than increasing the temperature.

HTH.

EDIT...lol......... just re-read your post Matty.... Sorry for telling you how to harden steel when you already know... lol... :slap:

Sounds very impressive matty mate lol, kind of you to offer your services out ;)

I guessed it might have been something to do with that.....LOL

And no worries......:D
