Mods AND reliability!!

Hello again,

It's becoming a major job planning all the stages of modding my car, but I'm slowly getting there... next stage is performance, already done the filter (blitz) and the catback exhaust is on its way.

I'm planning on a remapped ECU and a greddy boost controller so I can have sensible boost (12psi??) most of the time and silly boost (14-16psi??) on the odd occasion to try to eek out the life of the standard tubs as long as I can.

Now I'm a little paranoid about blowing things up as I have done in the past on other cars by going about it in the wrong way (massive boost upgrades and no consideration to cooling)

Along with fitting a set of oil temp, coolant temp and boost guages I was also thinking of either bigger intercoolers and/or water jets for the ICs, seen a diy waterjet FAQ and it certainly isnt rocket science. Also a bigger rad is on the cards.

Anything else I can do to keep things cool (and less prone to blowing up on me!!) I guess i'm unlikely to suffer detonation with these mods as they arent out of this world, but would water injection be a good safe guard too? I really dont mind spending a couple of grand on all this stuff cos in the long run I see it helping to prevent an even more expensive rebuild!!! or am I just wasting my dough and all these bits wont really help that much at all (turbos still go pop and pistons still melt....)

Jeez the state of me, up at 12:30am worrying about my car... :slap:

The mods on here are terribly unreliable ;) ... ohh your talking car mods..

with regards to cooling, what about a different front bumper to get more air in there!!!

Forgot to mention '99 spec front bumper being fitted which I understand also offers better air flow (hope I'm right with that!!) and slam panel thingie too from smithys place. 3degree drop in temp sounds good to me!

i was going to go for either a scarab bumper from the zed center or a greddy gracer

Although cooling is a good thing, the more worrying thing to be thinking about is the amount of pressure you are running through stock engine, and the horsies on the box.

TBH 16psi on standard sized tubbies (better tubby internals) with stock engine internals and cooling setup IMHO is ok, it can take it. So what you are looking for at 12psi on standard everything all the time is absolutley fine.

Most people say and I heard Topless telling me that 15psi is really max for standard turbos, I would tend to agree, 16psi or more they can not flow enough and run out of steam at high RPM, also they will die very quickly under this pressure compared to normal pressures. Infact I would say no more than 12psi on stock tubbies for reliability.

Anyways, if you getting bigger tubbies, dependant on the size, if bigger at say 12-13 psi you may well be flowing as much air as equal to 16psi on standard. Either way, I personally wouldnt go over this flow on standard block.

Bigger IC's for cooling is good, but, I would say if your looking at what you say you are it is not NEEDED, although would still be a good investment for the engine as the cooler the better.

I can not say for sure what sort of pressure the head can take and what the stock internals are good up to. So it would be best asking paul C or duffer on that one.

i had my standard turbos runing at 16psi

lasted about 2000 miles

Im not quite sure whats been done to but mine has run 16psi for around 4 to 5 yrs. Thinkin about it maybe this is why my auto box is on the way out again!

  reminds me of my silvia, spent a grand on mods (thats a lot of dough for a 18yr old!!!) and it went pop very soon afterwards..

Was done by Silvia Engineering (now known as SE right?) cant fault thier work it went fast as foook (for a while anyway!!)

The the general rule of thumb is Cooling is good and will protect the engine internals but isn't going to protect the tubs if I insist on running silly boost.

SO what about detonation, car only runs on Optimax, if I got for a max 14-16psi with a remapped ecu and stock injectors am I likely to get detontation? water injection is a lot cheaper than a set of new nismos!!!! :D

mine runs 13psi remapped ecu exhaust and air filter, stock injectors and intercoolers seems fine ( 364 bhp & 350lbs ) bet the slut blows up now but no det.

Not wishing to be a granny here but what was the extra insurance cost for you guys who did do the boost upgrades?

I did my own boost upgrade lol, and insurance, well, they cant really tell what boost im running anyway, unless they get an inspector in the car and I start breaking speed limits, I doubt they even know what stock boost is!!

So for insurance purposes, its stock lol

Indeed, unless your car is a total loss and Mr Insurance inspector comes to have a look at it you're unlikely to get caught out. And even then they aren't looking for mods, they are trying to put a value to the car for the pay-out.

Of course if you do get caught out you can kiss goodbye to any payouts you may be due, all the premiums you have paid and you may well be getting a knock from your friendly local fraud plod!!!

Indeed, and I doubt they could even test the pressure as the car wouldnt even be running at that stage lol.

The likely hood of them finding two small welding tips wedged in two specific vacuum hoses is also very very slim ;)

Anyways, I was gonna start off on the boost controller subject but dont wanna hijack your thead so i'll start me own ;)

my insurance £509 heavy mods mainly bodywork and paint

Im gona wait til winter and hopefully source a manual gearbox unless one comes up soon, been looking for ages, the manual one hardly ever go wrong from what i hear.

welli had an auto rebuils 2 yeard ago and still going strong

No it's not - first place they'll look, because it's such a well-known trick!

Anyway, having insured several different states of mod, there wasn't much logic to it - and it didn't go up much either. Chipping it seemed to have the biggest effect.

what if you modify the bleed actuators themselves on the car so they bleed more air off, standard items, "More boost Mr Inspector???? They must be faulty then!"
