Got to do either a psiton or valve on the zed as either the rings are f***ed or a valve is stuck open. My question is can the pistons be removed from the bottom? I will be doing this monumental job myself sometime in the future so I need the easiest way of doing this so I thought if I could get the sump off will I be able to take them out from the bottom?

I asked the same question mate and was told that it was so much aggro its near impossible. I know that the new pistons are put in from the top and to try and compress the rings from the bottom would be a nightmare. Looks like the lump is coming out bud :(

Nope as Jock says, pistons must be inserted from the top. You'd have to remove the gearbox to get the crank out anyway and after all the work struggling under the car you could have had the engine in and out by then ;) Anyway, if it IS a valve then the heads gotta come off anyway. Good time to check everythin else out too :)

Which time? LMAO

Got it out in 2 1/2 hours this time round but thats because I've removed a hell of a lot of stuff from the engine bay. You're lookin at around 10 hours on your first go, depending on what you've done before etc...

Took me (clueless) and Fuserleer (done it several times)

(and also an hour to go and get a breaker bar)

I also spent a couple of hours the day before on me own pulling hoses and dropping fluids, so Sunday was just unbolting unbolting unbolting...

We dropped the exhaust in one piece because the cat bolts were very stuck - so that cost us a bit of time too.

Since there is no engine to go back in my ex-car we weren't too careful about the loom etc, so that might slow you down a bit.

it might be a good idea to do all the pistons while you r there, by that i mean piston rings !! a lot of work matey from the bottom, get to it from the top, as the lads say best to take the lump out and do all you can to it when the engine is out will save you a fortune in the future !!

OK then guy's whilst this engine is out what else do you recommend? Quite happy with the power at the mo. Car is totally standard apart from apexi intake, mongoose and de-cat. Going to have the plemun chromed. Turbo seals are going I think but can't be sure 'cos the smoke could be coming from the piston rings. I think the 'rings will come as a set of 6 anyway so I'll get all of them replaced.

do a water pipe bypass on the plenum, remove the egr valve, pcv replace and a few other bits easier when the lump is out

Polish piston crowns, clear water channel flashings, balance pistons and conrods
