Safety boost

Guys,

My car has gone into safety boost but why?

It is a case of removing the ECU for an hour to reset it isnt it?

Mark. :duffer:

Check the ECU for error codes!

Either Det sensor or Temp sensor will cause this....

Doesn't the car reset to normal boost once the engine has been switched off?

Not if the error is still there

Well I took the car out at dinner (At work!) and its def not boosting fully!

I need to short out those two connectors under the dash dont I?

Can anyone remember which two it is? I havent had to do this for about a year!

I will get the codes but does anyone also have a chart of what codes represent what! lol I really must buy a conzult, would that tell me?

I will then save all this info into my 300zx folder at home for further reference! :)

Thanks guys!! :)

Oh and ANDY, thanks for the info about the adj upper links arms, the missus is buying me some for my birthday!! Whoo Hoo!!

Nice one!!! :)

Oh an oh, she cant understand why I am so happy about two pieces of metal!! :)

Women will never ever ever ever understand cars will they!! :) Well some might but mine doesnt!! :):)

Its remove the Battary not the ECU or an hour!

Also if you remove the wood over the ecu and twiz the pot on the side then put ignition on, the led on the ecu and the ecu light on dash flash indicating the fault.

Theres a post somwhere with full distructions.

Rossy, theres a quicker way than that mate, by shorting two wires it shows the codes btu I havent done it for years!!!

Not into shorting wires on my ECU..if you get it wrong (can you really be 100%) your may just get smoke comming out of it...

No, I'll stick to the method I've used and found works...the pot thingy.

It told me my Det Sensor had gone...new one fitted by me on top of the engine and haypresto...no ecu error and full boost when warm.

Cheers me deers!! :)

Will get looking b4 I go home, although its too damp to boost too much!! :)

Oh bugger, so me Det Sensor could be gone!! :(

Mmmmm, well, if its gotts be done!

Was it an easy job?(starts rolling sleeves up)

IMO the det sensor is only a det sensor if it is located in the proper position. It must be capable of listening to the noises from the bottom end of the engine. If the sensor is at the top then there's plenty of stuff to absorb the sounds/vibrations...

Proper replacement involves removal of upper and lower intakes. May be possible with the gearbox off but can't say for sure....

 doesnt sound easy Andy, hate it when u get all technical!!

Could I be supplied with diagrams of how to do it or should I leave it to the pro's if this is the case of course!

TBH its quite a major task bud :(

for upper plenum removal. Then the cambelt must come off (upper idler pulley stud is attached to the lower intake). Then most of the coolant pipework, then the lower intake, then you can replace the det sensor and put the whole frickin lot back together :D

Or you can plug in a resistor instead for 2p and have no det sensor.

I don't see why it's a problem as anyone who has a boost controller is running around with it disabled anyway...

Whoooaaa, hold the firckin phone guys......

Chris, I have a apexi AVC-R so I guess this rules out the det sensor then??

I will try running different setings to see if I can increase the boost?!?

Mmmmm, the plot thickens.

Can anyone out there explain to me what the ECU does to the car when it goes into safety boost? Does it adjust the actuator or does it lower fuelling?!??

I agree with Andy, relocating the det sensor is not a good idea IMO.

although if you have a boost controller you wont get safety boost, you will at least get the timing retarded (assuming you havnt got a chip with not safety timing maps i know!)

you have boost control solenoids, which operate the wastegate actuators at a lower setting (7psi) there are also alternate timing maps which are used

You shouldn't need to turn the boost up or have you only just fitted it and are assuming you're in safety boost?

When the ECU detects detonation or the water is not up to temp (or faulty sensors) it retards the ignition and opens the wastegate solenoids to give safety boost level.

When the controller was fitted you should have unplugged the wastegate solenids so it can't be that.

Even if the ignition is retarded you should still get good boost from your controller.

Sounds like you have a boost leak!

Do the ECU diag and see if there's a fault.

If not then either something has come loose or you havent yet set the contoller up...

Chris,

Really strange this. Havent had chance to do the check yet BUT driving home last night, initially it was in some form of safety boost mode then I decided to reapply the settings from the boost controller, ie, change to setting [A] and then change it back to setting , left it for about 5 mins and carried on driving. Then afer 5 I booted it and it boost back up to 1.05bar with a little bit of detonation  not good, I know, so I adjusted the duty down a bit and carried on. Then it went back into a safety boost mode again?!?! WTF?!?

Got home and it was still running low boost so I thought I would leave it! Went out abotu 8 for dinner and thought well I might as well try it again, this time it boosted back up to 1bar with a little bit of detonation again!!!! Mmmm, all this detonation isnt good!! (Bake bean rattle so I have been told).

Drove to work this morning and its detonating at even 0.92bar???? although if I come of the throttle a bit it doesnt?!??? Whats going on???

The boost controller was fitted in line with the manufactuers instructions so I assume it all wired in properly, never had any issues until now (its been in about a month).

Can someone, probably Andy, give me a technical breakdown of WHY a car detonates? I have heard this is very bad! Bigger injectors?? Intercoolers??

Will the ECU show up a boost leak?

Gonna do the ECU test @ 1pm today so I will post the results....

I'd check the connection to the boost control solenoid to try and sort the boosting problem ;)

Detonation is rare with the JWT chip so unless its leaned out at the top end with the AFC then I doubt its that. Is the timing set correctly? Has the fuel filter been replaced recently? Any fuel leaks? Any other error codes from the ecu?
